A Rolex appetite but a Timex budget - recommendations?

The title of the thread about sums it up. Know very little about watches really. I favor the vintage ones as I do my straights. Is there a vintage watch site or forum that might have something? Any suggestions on what to look for?

For a captain waterproof should be a paramount consideration!

JK! but it depends on what your needs are in a watch. Vintage watches are nice but finding one that is super reliable for cheap may be an issue. I have never daily worn a vintage watch but I looked into it and it seems that they are not very waterproof, do not always keep the best time, and depending on what type of watch you get the thing may need an overhaul costing hundreds of dollars.

If you really are on a timex budget then a new timex watch may be a good choice...

But really to get some recommendations of watch models we need more info about what you need in the watch.

Ah, good point. Despite my moniker it does not have to be waterproof.:biggrin1:

I like timeless items actually so digital is out. I don't mind resetting a watch or clock on occasion if it loses or gains some time, no biggy. My day job has me making sales calls, loading boxes in the warehouse and working the phone. The overly large watches don't do a thing for me. I am not attracted to the ones with lots of functions / dials / etc. I like a clean look to the face. I also am not after some highly refined and dressy watch. Kind of an in between one for under $100.00 or so. I see some are self winding, manual wind and other - I am fine with any.

Hope that helps narrow things a bit.

There are any number of manual seiko 5 automatics on amazon in the 65 to 125 dollar range. At the high end of that range, the Orient brand Blue/Black and Orange Makos are a very popular automatic divers watch for a WIS (watch idiot savant).

Focus on Seiko and Orient if your budget is low. The selection is large, the quality is solid, and the prices aren't ridiculous. Several Seiko 5's might catch your eye.

I would check out Invicta and Orient. Both offer classic looking dive watches. I have both, and I feel like Invicta has the better quality of the two.

I have had good luck with pulsar watches , online they are usually right in your price range. I have some more expensive watches but I like the pulsars for work and knocking around and they have held up well. You can easily switch out the bands as well. I dont know that I have ever linked anything on this site, so if I have done something I should'nt I apologize and please delete, I am not afilliated in anyway. I beleive kohls and a few other stores carry these but they are much more expensive but if you want to see them before you by they are out there.

There is a nice long thread in the haberdashery about the Timex weekend, it seems to fit your criteria. As many others have said the Seiko 5 looks nice and seems to be popular.

Other than that I'd have to agree with LBF, I'm out of my element.

Cap'n I, like you can't go overboard on a fine time piece. My poor watch is subjected to tons of punishment at work, and I never take it off. It goes through the shower with me and all.

I would feel naked without it (which is the point of a shower, I digress)

This is what I wear these days. It is a solar, so no replacing batteries. The band died rather quickly, I have replaced it and the watch keeps on ticking.

Cheers.

I've had and have this issue and due to my lust but thriftiness, I aim to get the best bang out of my buck. Here's my rec:
$100 under Invicta, Pulsar, or Timex (Invicta's Pro Driver series is their bread and butter)
$100-200 You can't go wrong with an Orient. A lot of watch for the money, in-house movement, looks a lot more expensive than what it is, reliable. Seiko. A lot of variety and dependability.
$200-350. Citizen and Tissot. Tissot is an entry level luxury Swiss Made watch. The movements it has are similar to a lot of Tag's. I'm waiting on one myself.....
Good luck!

Gotta agree with kevan here.Great value in those lines

Scott i would check out hamilton or longines. I really like my longines master collection granted they are a little higher in price. Remember, guys should always own a nice watch. You wear a watch everyday. You should like looking at it! My wife has all kinds of jewelry that amounts to a lot of money. A 2k watch is nothing in comparison! At least that is my justification:biggrin1:

I highly doubt he's going to find a Hamilton or Longines for the price range he mentioned above (over/under ~$100)

Also you can find some really nice used watches for great deals on forums. Just try different forums and look at them daily. I have a few watches from doing this and buying from reputable people.

Two more brands to check -- Skagen and Citizen.

The Skagen's are very quiet, understated watches. They have quartz movements and analog displays. Very low "bling", with some in matte titanium. Prices might be a bit high for you, but they're not in "luxury" territory.

I like some of the Citizen watches. The ones I'm thinking of are also quartz movement / analog display models. Many are "EcoDrive" -- run by a photocell on the watch face.

Take the warning about vintage-watch repair costs seriously. A cleaning and oiling (the minimum work for a mechanical movement) can run $100.

There's a huge watch forum here:

There are special-interest sections for anything from Casio to Vacheron Constantin. Have fun --
