What's new

A rant, I need to blow off some steam soon. (kinda long)

So I find out yesterday that I will be no longer employed. Business has been slow but there has been no indication that someone was going to be let go. Being that the other gentleman working here has been here for a long time it was me that had to go. I had started the process of unemployment but the owner of the business I worked for (a small mom and pop auto parts store) is known for fighting unemployment. So I am preparing for the inevitable conference calls and fighting with the owner. This comes not long after helping my father when he was being treated for cancer. I took the brunt of the bills in the apartment when he was missing work. I do not blame my dad for it I would gladly do it again for him or anyone I know but I have not been able to recover any of the little savings I had.

I have started posting stuff on craigslist, I don't own a lot of stuff. I rather have to repurchase things if/when I get hired again than struggle on paying my rent. Thankfully the summer is here and I can have the electric turned off in a week or two if unemployment is delayed or not given to me. Luckily a friend of mine lives down the hall so I can always use his place to job search on the internet. My brother who's cell phone plan I am under is going to cover my phone charges until I start collecting a paycheck or unemployment so at least I'll have a contact number for potential job calls.

I know I am the one to blame for me being in this situation (uneducated and skill less) it just sucks it was just popped on me like this. The owner of the business does not trust anyone so instead of given a week or even a few days notice he calls me in his office and tells me he has to let me go. I work in a business that there is nothing to steal, not many parts are expensive and even if they were it would be a long while for me to find a buyer of that particular part. There is not a lot of money that comes in a good 90% of the business was commercial accounts that paid by check. Somehow though we cannot be trusted by this guy. Even as I collected the few things I kept at the store he had the other gentleman watch me, seriously?

Rant over, I need to go punch something.

Sorry about your bad break, however is sounds like the guy wasn't the easiest to work for and if he didn't trust you (and people in general) there really wasn't a chance you'd get to take on additional responsibilities and get paid for it.

The good news is there are jobs out there for people willing to work and skills can be taught. If you are a good worker people will hire you.

Yeah there are some other stores (parts stores) that are going up in my area. Earliest any will be open is feb of next year. I am trying to get into one of them at least before then and hopefully get moved back into my area.

Terrible news and good luck with the next few weeks/months. Just so you know, it's protocol for people to be supervised/escorted out of the building whenever their employment is terminated regardless of their track record. Don't be offended by this.

In the case of the previous manager who was fired two years ago, we were told to watch him and make sure he doesn't take anything. Which is what was said to the other gentleman I worked with. This is not some big corporation with a multilevel office building and a hundred plus employees. This is a one story small commercial building with four rooms and what used to be four employees. The exit is twenty feet from the office I was fired in with one counter separating me from the door. Only thing I could have taken on my way out is a quart or two of oil or a tub of hand cleaner.

There is nothing else in that place. Just some parts (mostly for older vehicles) and the employees. It's not like I can take accounts, or account information and sell it or steal from them. I can't do any kind of corporate espionage or anything. This is a mom and pop with two stores and a small warehouse for storing extra stock. We've even had to buy our own pens and notebooks to take orders with.

Thanks all for the well wishes.

Sorry to hear that, but you know what they say, one door closes another opens. Have you thought about industrial parts, nearly the same job, you just get paid a whole lot more. A guy I work with doubled his wage when he started working with my company from the auto dealership he was with. Just a thought when you start the job hunt!

I was laid off bye a grass seed farmer 3 or so years ago and he not not even paid into unemployment but luckily I was running his mill doing all the paperwork and supervising the crew along with working my but off so I had all my pay stubs for the 2 years I worked for him and was able to prove my wages, then he tried to claim I was fired but he mentioned to unemployment he had to let one of the two head guys go so they called me and I explained him not paying into unemployment and I won the case. It was a huge battle and took so long I had found another job by the time it payed anything.

I started the job hunt but not much out there with this economy. It is going to be a long and arduous search. I have filled out some applications and I need to finish up my resume to email a few other companies. Amazing no one wants you to come in face to face any more everything is done online. I remember spending days visiting places filling out applications and dropping off resumes. Now it's a few minutes online and click to send and your done. It almost feels like I am not putting in any kind of effort to show I want the job.

Hopefully my little bit of experience will help me land a job. My biggest concern with getting a job is my health issues (which I have a few) although they do not interfere with my working some have caused me to miss work once in a while and up to a week at a time. I know for the most part I do not have to inform them of these issues but they will arise at sometime if I am hired. Which can cause me problems after being hired. I think I will wait until an actual interview to inform a company of my issues.

And sorry to the couple of people who emailed me. None of the items on craigslist are shaving related. Unless you want to buy my fusion razor with one cartridge left.

I have been in your shoes on 2 different occasions and I know exactly how you feel. The first time I lost my job I was at a complete loss on what to do. The last time I just realized it was a fact of life and there was nothing I could have done to prevent it from happening. It was economy based and the sales were just not there.

It looks as though you have inside sales experience and that would allow you to look outside of the auto parts. Many times when you are on unemployment you qualify for training.

One area that is hiring and offers good pay is in the gas and oil field. If there is anything going on in your area it is worth a look.

I had an owner that used to say everything happens for the best, it may not seem like it now, but this may be the change you need in order to increase your skill set and your earnings. It took me a while to bounce back, but I found a better job and it is something I enjoy.

Hang in there!!

I know this feeling all to well. I've been on the job hunt twice in this economy. I'd spend several hours in the morning looking at the job boards and applying for what I can then the rest of the day I felt like I wasn't doing enough to find a job, when in reality I applied for 4-7 jobs that day. I miss the days of the paper app, speaking directly to the manager, giving a firm handshake, presenting them with your resume, making a good impression. Now you do it all online while wearing your undies if you want.

And you are right, employers don't want to see you or talk to you until they are ready to interview you. Inquiring about your app just irritates them, in my experience anyway. But I've always done it anyway :biggrin1:

But on the bright side when you get one call back you will get more. It's always worked this way for me. I'd hear nothing for a few weeks then one job would call for an interview, then later that day or the next I'd get a different call.

You will land something but the process takes a little extra time now. As long as you are vigilant with looking for newly posted jobs and dedicated to the hunt someone will come calling for sure!

I have never been good with getting jobs. Even with the amount of jobs I have had in my life. When the economy was good it took me a very long time to get one. I will try and do my best but I always expect the worst, since that is what usually happens.

I wonder how much I could get for a used fusion handle and a cartridge? lol

call it vintage and throw it on the bay

I had the most luck with career builder. with a lot of the postings it's as simple as providing your name, email, and attaching your resume. You can even upload your resume to the website and let employers search for you.

Advance Auto parts in Maryland is always hiring, not sure why. Check them out in your area.
Also check out Jobfox, Snag a job, career builder and others on line. You can also search the net in your own area for employment that may be suitable just by using a search engine. I am kind of in the same boat as you with basically minimal education and skills, I worked in auto parts and construction parts for years and did ok. Working for a small company has its ups and downs for sure, I left my last job after eleven years because the owner/boss blew a gasket and I wasn't going to deal with it any longer. Now I work for a larger company, they have had four major layoffs in the last two years, with a bit of advance notice, but notice doesn't make much difference if you are one of the chosen. The smaller companies I worked for actually didn't have any layoffs while I was employed. I realize it doesn't help your situation much, but the economy is beginning to be felt more and more in the workplace.

I have applied to Advance in my area. Just doing the waiting game now. Problem is being a large corporation they hire a lot of bean counter types and not knowledgeable guys. I know because I have a friend that works there. He has had to train 4 different general managers for 4 different stores including his own, about parts. Not to mention every employee that has walked in their door. I am not against working for a large corporation I just don't want to end up like this guy. Everyone else making the money and him teaching them how to do their jobs and being the low man on the totem pole so to speak.

Thank you for the job sites. Most of them I never heard of then again I haven't had to look for a job for 9 years.

Sorry to hear about this. In my job I deal with our state (MA) unemployment assistance agency and as long as you were terminated through no fault of your own you have an absolute right to unemployment benefits. After all the employer has already paid those funds into the system.
