A lid

Is an airtight lid necessary to preserve a soap? Or can I just let it be free and enjoy the fresh air? The reason I'm asking is I melted some soaps together into a container, but it doesn't have a lid. I wouldn't think this would be a problem, but I might as well ask to make sure.

I've never found a lid to be essential. You will lose some scent and (depending on the soap) it will dry out a bit and possibly crack.

Most of my soaps are in open Old Spice mugs and they seem to suffer no ill effects on performance.

IMO, air tight lids will be detrimental to the soap..the trapped moisture will damage the soap

I keep soaps in airtight containers, but I let them dry for at least several days before putting them in. Moisture in airtight containers really will mess your soap up.

what about lids that aren't air tight? like wooden bowls? would that be preferable? would a bowl that drains be too messy?

A lid like the one Tabac uses is ideal. It allows air to flow above the puck of soap.

I do not think closing the lid will damage anything. I have done so with countless of creams and soaps and do it every day after my shave.

I have found the lid from a regular sized jar of peanut butter functions quite well as a lid for an Old Spice Mug. It doesn't fit so snugly so as to not allow air to circulate, but at the same time keeps the soap nice, and clean when in storage. :thumbup1:

a lid is not necessary to preserve soaps, but the scent will go away after prolonged exposure. if you want to preserve the scent, then a lid is necessary. I have two ramekins that I use for my col conks soaps and they don't have lids. the soaps work just fine but I can't really smell their scents anymore. mama bear soaps come in plastic containers with lids which preserve the scent (if that's what you want).

For soaps, I'm currently using Cella and Valobra. Cella comes in a screw-top container, I always close it promptly and nothing bad has happened so far! I molded the Valobra into snap-top plastic containers. Doubt it would ever mildew from the little moisture used in loading the brush.

But when I used to keep a puck in a mug, I found that a plastic lid from a fountain-type soft drink, or from a carton of nuts, or anything like that preserved the scent very well. Didn't fit tightly, just sat on top. So some air circulated and the puck didn't get moldy or anything. But the aroma remained.
