A cheap Super Speed for Me

I was at a flea market today and bought and old DE razor for $3.75. When I got it home, I cleaned it up a bit so I could see what I had. I had suspected that it was a Super Speed, and it turns out it is. No date code and no notches in the ends of the center bar, plus the wings on the ends tells me it is a pre-1948. However, when I looked at AsylumGuido's SS guide, I saw that mine had two differences from the ones that are shown. First off, the ones in the guide show a knurled ring right above the TTO knob. Mine is smooth. Also, in the photos there is a smooth flat looking bar on each end of the head (looking at the razor from the side) whereas mine looks like two flat straps below and parallel with the center bar which have been spread out and then bent back flat against the ends of the razor. Not sure what I have, but it does have the Gillette logo on the bottom of the head, along with "made in us" and "reg us" and "pat off". Whatever it is, it functions perfectly and I'm sure it's worth the $3.75. I guess as long as I'm happy with it, it's worth it. Any ideas why the differences on mine? Did I describe it well enough? Fred

I am new to this and I do not have a SS.. But as they say a picture is worth a thousand words. Is it possible to snap a pic and upload it for our viewing pleasure?

Congrats on the great find, for $3.75 that is a deal and a half, specially since it works for you.

Cheers

+1 on the picture.
there are very few gillette DE razors that i wouldnt pay $3.75 for (well whatever the £ equivalent to that currently is :) so imo its always worth buying at that sort of price.

Sounds like you may have one of the slightly rarer models that are similar to the Superspeed. ID will require some pics tho.

Congrats, less than 4 bucks is a good price even for a run of the mill Tech.

Yes, it could be a Ranger Tech, ca '41 or so. We need pics. Any ole cell phone camera will do.

$3.75?? :w00t:

Good snag; you should enjoy shaving with it.

41 Ranger Tech, hunh? Guess I didn't get such a good deal after all. I guess ignorance costs. Anyway, here are the 2 differences I noticed from the Super Speeds shown. See attachments, I don't know how to embed.

OK, looks like they embedded themselves. Top photo, I didn't have the tip of the pen right in the right place. Right below the tip you will see the two tabs bent back.

I think it's a Ranger Tech (and yes, they are considered to be more desirable).

Yes, Yes, that's it!! Wish I had the talent to take good photos like that. Oh well, God wanted me to be an ignorant hillbilly, and who am I to complain. Worth more? Ok, well maybe I shouldn't feel so bad after all. I was feeling like a jackass, cause I thought the super speed was the best and I had thought I had one. Thanks for the info, Fred.

PS: I'll shave with in the morning and see if it is up to snuff......

OK, I shaved with it this morning. It shaved a little better than my 1959 adjustable, but I'm not sure that this was because of a difference in the razors, or because I had a different brand of blade. Regardless of that, I felt it was a little more "hand friendly" in that it was lighter and thinner. It's a keeper. Fred

Nice score!

You may have been confusing Ranger Tech with a Tech razor in your mind; superspeeds are generally more expensive than Techs. The Ranger Tech, on the other hand, is NOT a Tech but essentially a special form of a superspeed.

$3.75 was a heck of a deal on that razor, for sure.

Your right, I was. Thank you for clearing that up.
