What's new

A Chat with my Grandfather.

I was at my Grandfather's yesterday and we were playing chess, he asked me about shaving with his Gillette Slim Adjustable(1964) and how the shaves were...and (wait for it) why in the name of hell was i shaving with a DE.?
(My grandfather no longer shaves and has a beard, which is why he gave me The Gillette Slim Adjustable)

I told him that the shaves were great and i really enjoyed shaving traditionally.
Making my move, i asked him about his shaving routine, his setup, his gear, etc etc. As it turns out my grandfather really enjoyed shaving. He told my about some english shaving soap he used to shave with (he didn't remember the name), he used a shaving brush and bought the slim adjustable that i now have in the late 60s or the early 70s. Gave me a couple of tips on shaving, cold water shaving being one of them.

Taking my bishop he asked me about the creams, AS, etc i use. I told him about my shave setup and my gear.
I even told him about B&B and he was surprised to hear that a lot of people still use DEs and that the art of traditional shaving has not been lost.

Was it a good checkmate, a gradual attrition, or something else?

I hope he was pleasantly surprised about the current state of traditional shaving.

It's always nice to take a trip down memory lane and listen to our older generation recollect how shaving used to be in their time. what is interesting is that shaving then was an essential part of Men's grooming. It was a given that they shaved every day and they always made time for it. I had conversations with my late father along the same lines; he went full circle, cut throat, DE Super slim, Electric remington, G2, Mach3, Mach 3 turbo. he then got a tad angry at the prices for refills and switched to a rolls razor....

I love stories like this. Thanks for posting it.

Yeah, My Grandfather was an Engineer for the army and worked on mainframe computers. He also told me that shaving was an essential part of men's grooming, and they shaved everyday .

The world has become a global village.

Seems like I may need to schedule a trip to visit my granddad and take a walk down memory lane with him. Very inspiring. Thanks for sharing.
