5/8 wedge Tiger Straight razor

Picked up this "Tiger" straight today. I have heard the name and there are a number of Gentlemen on the forum that have this brand. I would like to get some information as to the manufacturer (Sheffield, Dovo) ??? that made these razors. It appears to be pretty old I'd guess around 1920's (?) It was in pretty rough shape when I got it from the Antique Store and the edge was good but very dull. I didn't think I'd be able to get a good edge on it but with some cleanup and honing and stropping it took a VERY keen edge. This thing is sharper than my double hollow grinds! Does anyone have any info???? Thanks! :001_cool:

What you have there looks like a professional barber's razor. It has the barber's notch and everything, looks like someone ground off the spike tip though? Does that roundness look like it came that way or like the point was crudely removed? I'm not surprised it's a quality instrument ;)

I'd love to get my hands on an actual barber's quality razor... then again, these days the stuff we roll off the line for personal use is as good as the professional stuff was back in the day. It's just way easier to get better steel than it was back then...

But I'd love to see that assertion tested. How's this compare with any new manufacture razors you have, if any? (i.e. a Dovo, Thiers, whatnot)

The tip looks like an original barbers point and the spike tip isn't removed it is just slightly radiused. I think it looks totally original in that respect. I got some feedback from the TSD forum from a very knowledgable person and he says he has a tiger like this one with a box and everything and it was manufactured by Geneva of New York about 1920's. :001_cool: This puppy really took an edge with a little honing and I'm pretty sure a lot of the problem was uncertainty, inexperience and lack of technique on my part. I'm still going to work on the honing and stropping the edge some more before I use it again. This Tiger is about 100 years old and it looks like it's built like a tank! I'm sure the better quality modern razors are as good as or better than these. The feel of the wedge is entirely different to the double hollow grounds that I have so I'm not sure how to compare. Someone said it takes a few times to get the "feel" of the solid blade. Thanks again! :001_cool:

I don't know anything about it, but it sure looks nice.

Thanks! I really like these razors with a little history behind them! :thumbup1:
