47 Ronin

Kind of mixed feelings on this. It looks like a fun movie to watch but the actual and true story of the 47 Ronin or "Chushingura" does not need embellishment. They died with honor living the bushido code. They are all buried in a special section of a cemetery in Tokyo and still revered by people today.

Hollywooding it and or modernising the story would be a shame. 300 was a joke like that- what could possibly need embellishing about the battle of thermopylae?

There are already a few outstanding versions of the 47 ronin's story. Mizoguchi and Inagaki produced films are fairly easy to find. I believe that Criterion has released both films. I do not see a reason to see any version with Mr. Reeves.

Hollywood seems to specialize in taking immortal tales and beating them to death. Every time I hear someone use the word 'talented' in reference to a Hollywood writer or producer associated with a remake I have the feeling I'm listening to a deluded and enthusiastic fool or an accomplished liar.

I just tried to watch the trailer... mad it about half way. If having Reeves star wasn't bad enough, the plot appears to have very little to do with the famous story.

I watched as far as seeing Keanu Reeves and had to stop.

+1

Personally, as a shogun in Feudal Japan, I would have chosen Aaanold or my other favorite, Tom Cruise as my savior. Japan has always been accepting of gaijin within their society:001_rolle.

I guess for a fantasy trip it'd be okay, but man, doesn't Hollywood even try anymore?

wow....WHY????

i have no idea, i'm guessing they're trying to cash in on the success of the 1st one? a bit late imo.

i saw the trailer, and i wasn't impressed. i'll be skipping it for sure. i'm talking about the new 300, not 47 ronin. it doesn't look that bad.

I'll watch this, but I'll wait until it's on OnDemand.

I'm a big fan of samurai movies. I'm a bit disappointed that Keanu is in this. But it'd be worse if they were actually trying to stick to the original legend or copy an existing classic film (can't stand Americanized 'remakes'). It looks like a fantastical movie, has samurai in it... I figure it's worth a few bucks to see it. Count me in!
