What's new

$40 burning a hole in my pocket. What kinda brush would that get me?

All I have now are ebay brushes, eliterazor.com brushes, and a tweezerman. A brush from one of the prestigious brands would be nice at some point, but I know $40 isn't quite going to get me there.

Many thanks in advance.

That will get you a Wee Scot....a brush of amazing utility for such a tiny size.

A few bucks more could likely put you into a custom from Rudy Vey too.

I've really been looking at the Omegas. They're beautiful brushes, and I know they're well loved around here. I thought about a boar brush or a boar/badger blend just to add some variety to my current all-badger lineup.

As for the DIY project... I don't know. I'm pretty handy, but it makes me nervous. Is it easy?

I don't see how another low-dollar brush is going to add much, performance-wise, to your stable. Save up for something you'll be truly proud of.

a really nice Omega (if you want boar) of a really nice Vulfix (if you want Badger)

Very easy....lots of examples here. Old handles are true classics, removing the old hair and installing new varies a bit in difficulty but overall it is easy.

And the restored brush is not just another cheap brush, but a nice brush with even more mojo because you did it yourself.

Gruder,

That's easy for you to say... you know, not being in the throes of SBAD and all.

I'm sure you're right though.

I've got a thread somewhere down the page. It's fairly simple.
Maybe I'm not supposed to say that as the prices for useless pieces of plastic and bakelite on ebay are already pretty high.

I agree with Gruder on this.

Another 20 dollars can get you Simsons Case which is a very nice brush

Omega makes some nice brushes in the 60-80 range.

Another low level badger isn't going to add anything.

TGN knots aren't anything amazing and by the time you buy a handle off ebay you will have spent more money than you would like to

Should get you an Edwin Jagger medium best badger (old C&E BBB) from The English Shaving Company which now has free shipping until Father's Day.

Hmm... 23.50gbp = 35usd... and free shipping? If it's true that this brush will ship for $35, I would not hesitate to order one. I have the C&E one and it's still holding up marvelously three years later!!

What is missing out of these brushes that you are looking for by getting a new one?

I like Gruder's suggestion about saving up another $20 or $40 to get you up in the realm of the good stuff. The suggestion for the Case is a good one. I have a Colonel in best that has been a great value to me.

If you are staying under $40 and looking for something to last, then I think the boar brush camp is the way to go. Omega and Semogue are great deals.

re-knotted vintage handles can be fun to do if you are looking for something of a DIY project. I have done a couple and like them well enough, but I can't say they are equal to my 2 band Simpsons.

Well gentlemen, I may have just taken the plunge on a Rooney 1/1 listed on the vendor forum. It depends on whether or not I've been beaten to the punch.
