What's new

3 shaves in with DE & it keeps getting better!

Well I'm three shaves in with my 1966 Gillette Slim.

And no need to call 911! not really even a nick. a couple of small spots that wept a little that Niveia shave balm seemed to take care of. I did use a styptic stick once but I really don't think I needed to.

First shave was at setting #2 - Old Gillette blades that came with the razor my dad had in the medicine cabinet. I messed several places but that I think was primarily blade angle and also I think the #2 setting was too low. Did two passes. both verticle top to bottom except under nose with 2nd pass being horizontal.

2nd shave was again 2 passes. This time at setting #3. Was again better and closer, but still not a BSS shave. I definately think I will have to go ATG to get a BSS. My beard lays oddly from my chin bone down. And lays differently on the left than the right.

3rd shave this morning. Again at setting #3 but added a 3rd pass. #1 top to bottom vertically. #2 ear to nose horizontally. #3 bottom to top (neck to head). best shave so far. But still not as close as I could get with disposable 4 blade Wilkinson.

I think I need my new Parker best badger brush to break in. I also need to get my lather technique down better. Lather is OK but nothing like I've seen in pictures and youTube videos all of you guys seem to get.

I also think that I need to really understand my beard and how it lays. I have a good idea, I just wanted to get more experience with the DE razor before I really start doing more. Adding the 3rd pass this morning I could tell the sensitivity to my face compared to 2 passes.

I may have to go to setting #4 but want again to wait for some more experience. I'm getting presentable shaves and no nicks and cuts. So I don't want to push a good thing. Also I need yet to buy a sample pack of blades. I went out and bought some Wally world Wilkinsons. Mainly because that is what was available in a local store. Wallgreens and CVS had store brand stuff and that is all! And I seem to get a good shave with the disposable Wilkinson razor I've recently been using.

I'm going on vaction next week so really not enough time to order and get something in. So what I have with the old Gillette blades and the Willkies will have to do for now!

I may take a few of my straight razors I have to polish and clean them up while camping and sitting around.

One of these days I'll figure out how to take pictures and load them up on the site here. At lest a few of the prettier ones!

Don't worry too much about getting your lather to look like the pics. Mine never looks that great but it works well enough.

+1

As long as your providing enough buffer to shave comfortably you'll be fine. My lather with Arko soap and lather with Praraso soap don't look anything alike but perform relatively well.

Congrats flyingfool!
