3 Olives?

Was out meting some friends and got a basic gin martini, it comes out with three olives in it. Am I alone in thinking that that is a little bit overkill, I'm not complaining much mind you, it just seemed to upset the esthetic of it.

That depends on whether or not you like olives. If I were still drinking, I would enjoy having 3 olives in my martini.

I guess I just don't enjoy olives enough  For the size I think 2 would have been better but oh well, guess I shouldn't complain about it.

I read somewhere that there are purists who believe that a Martini should contain either one or three olives. Never two, which would be a sacrilege.

I find that funny. To me, the only sacrilege is not using gin.

When I make my own, I use three, yet I rinse them in cold water. I like olives, but I also like my Martini "non-dirty" (no olive juice).

To each their own. (except for the gin part :001_smile).

Absolutely: it is bad luck to have two olives. Any seasoned bartender will tell you. Superstitions of the drinking world! If you go to a bar and get a Martini with two olives, you will know instantly that the bartender is inexperienced.

Funny you should say that -- My sister (who was once a bartender) mentioned that fact and my 13 year old daughter picked up on it. Now anytime she sees a Martini with olives served at a restaurant , she pretends disgust if there's only 2.

I never cared for olives so I sometimes order a "Mother Superior" - a martini with a prune. I usually get a weird look when I order it but every once in a while the bartender will get it right.

Nice. A friend used to order Gibsons (perhaps as a device to deter friends from piking interest in wanting to sip his drink) and I think I perfer that variation over olives if done right. Also Gin is I feel the key aspect to a Martini; if you want vokda, just have it straight up, chilled, in a cocktail glass. I wouldn't call that a Martini, though.

Another instance of YMMV I guess...I had a look around at a few 'definitive' sources on the martini and one said that 'It should always be one...three would be considered very rude' while another said that the standard number has always been three. Another said that any more than one should be placed separately outside of the drink itself. Who knows....

There's also the dirty variation that uses olive brine as opposed to (or as well as if you want to go full-bore) an olive.

Agreed. It's only gauche if you ask for three olives. Otherwise, one or three's fine.

There is a bar here in town that makes one that has more than 3 olives. What they do is fill the glass with olives then pour bombay gin over the top.
