What's new

1st restoration. Is it a keepsake letter opener?

I received my great grandfather’s razor recently. I have done a little sanding with 1000
grit sand paper. I decided to hone the blade a little to see what I could do. I
found that by the larger spot where there was rust on the blade that the blade
seems to crumble. Is it restorable or do I just have a nice keepsake?

I know nothing about straights but the handle is beautiful. Maybe you can add a new blade if you cant fix it? You can always keep the old blade stored for sentimental value.

.

Sanding paper doesn't cost all that much, I'd say try to sand it out, and see how much is left afterwards...

Probably go down to 400 or 600 grit and see what happens.

I really love the scales.

Maybe I will try replacing the blade. With looking at the old blade maybe I will make a shorty and new scales for it.

wait!!! why? there is nothing fundamentally wrong with this blade.

if you replace it, its not your grandfathers razor. if you dont want to shave with it, all cool - just set it aside and pick up another one.

there are a million razors out there.. but only one was your grandfathers.

Ooh me too with the +1
Origami78 slow down and don't change out that blade.
It's the blade not the scales that make it your grandfather's razor.
Here's my grandfather's that I restored
