What's new

$19.50 for an uncased Aristocrat and a Gem SE. Good deal or no?

I was surprised to see this on eBay as a buy-it-now listing this evening. I snapped it up without even really thinking about it. The Aristocrat looks nice... probably "very good" by B&B standards. I'm on the hunt for a matching case now, and then I'll probably put it up on the B/S/T here as a complete set.

Thanks in advance!

Eh, it's ok. As stated above, depends on the condition. I picked one up for 15 bucks on the bay, but I was looking for a nice shaver - and it was. Pretty good shape too.

This confuses me:

I'm on the hunt for a matching case now, and then I'll probably put it up on the B/S/T here as a complete set

If you bought it, why not shave with it?? Aristocrats are fantastic shavers.

I'm sure it is. I like to complete sets and sell them for profit once in a while too, though. There's something appealing about getting a good deal on a dirty old razor, cleaning it up and pairing it with its other components, and releasing it back into the wild as a complete, shiny new set.

A polite reminder that the B/S/T is not intended as a place for flipping razors bought elsewhere at a profit. The spirit is for members to share extra razors we have and let others enjoy them, enough said.

I understand and appreciate your concern. It's viewpoints like this that make B&B such a valuable community. However, in my own defense, I'll say the following:

1. I'm not talking about "flipping" razors for obscene profits here. I'm not offering $50 run-of-the-mill Flare Tips. Anything I ever sell will be priced fairly at currently agreed upon values. If I get these razors for such a steal that I'm able to sell them for no more than what they're worth while still making a profit, I don't see the problem.

2. I'm doing lots of "legwork" to assemble sets that some people don't have the time or energy to pursue. A small profit could almost be considered a finder/assembler's fee in my opinion.

3. Lastly... and here's the ugly truth. Regardless of any lofty B/S/T mission statement, I'm willing to bet things are being sold for a profit on it every single day. As long as we're still fair, as I said, I don't see a problem. We offer things that eBay doesn't. If someone buys something from me and they don't like it, I'll return it. I often stick lots of "extras" in my sales. Razors, samples, etc.

Anyway, just my two cents. I don't disagree with your sentiment. I just think it could be a little fine tuned.

Seems to me that the poster was being extremely gentlemanly by quietly reminding you that the B/S/T was for B&B members to share extra razors for others to try not a place for hawking razors bought elsewhere at a profit, all of this following a post in which you'd asked the forum if you got a good price on a razor you "snapped up without even really thinking about it" and later openly said you were going to sell for profit to someone on the B/S/T. Seemed like a nice polite reminder indeed - and one with which I agree.

To quote an older thread: "This site was not set up as profit center for members" http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php?t=94315

And that shall be enough said from me, too.

There's a big difference between reselling items "at a profit" and putting together nice sets and reselling at a price that takes your time and effort into account. I'd give MM the benefit of the doubt in this case, he's been pretty upstanding so far.

Fair enough. Just clarifying what I thought was a valid point but I don't know MM, so I will give him the benefit of the doubt - not for me to cast aspersions. No hard feelings on my end - :001_cool:

No... nor do I have any hard feelings towards anyone who made their feelings known. It's really why I love this place. The art of the gentlemanly disagreement is alive and well here.

Being new here, and new to DE razors in general, I have zero problem with this. It is a mutually beneficial arrangement that lets members such as myself acquire a nice set assembled by someone with the know how to put the individual components together properly, while allowing them to enjoy their hobby and make enough profit to continue doing so. I watch the B/S/T to gain insight into values (and look for items to buy, obviously), and it seems that most, if not all, members are very value-conscious in their listings. I trust it a heck of a lot more than ebay, I must say. :thumbup1: Keep up the good work & let me know when you have a nice Aristocrat that you can let go for a good price...damned if I'm not smitten by those things at the moment :w00t:

The way I see it, if it weren't for the fairly vibrant and competitive marketplace in vintage razors a lot of real treasures would be sitting in bins or headed for scrap heaps. If there are people with the patience and keen eyes to find these razors, restore them, and keep them in circulation--or at best put them in the hands of someone who will truly appreciate and value the razor, more power to them. Buyers can sort out what's a fair price in the end.

You can see sellers on ebay putting up razors who have no idea about their value but have an idea that they might have something good. It's a damn good thing to have people all over the world doing that. The more people out there pursuing a sale, the more everyone benefits in the end.

In any case 20 bucks for an aristocrat and a gem is a great deal, you get to use a high quality tto and a good shaving se at 10 bucks a pop each. Not too shabby.
