Edges of the plate curled up? You mean the plate wasn't flat or the interrupted plate had the surface lifted at the corners?

The continuous plate had edges above the sharpening plane. So if you rest a razor perpendicular to the long axis, it’ll just sit above the surface. You can adjust the angle of approach to be diagonal to the long axis, just annoying.
