What makes the 1977 comedy Slap Shot so good is the weird, violent trio of hockey players Jeff, Steve and Jack Hanson. The Hansons were inspired by Carlsons, an infamous and very real trio of brawlin' hockey brothers -- and in fact, Jeff and Steve Hanson were actually portrayed by Jeff and Steve Carlson, who took a season off to make the movie. The third Carlson brother, Jack, would have been in the movie too, but he was called up to play for the Edmonton Oilers, so the Carlsons' teammate Dave Hanson (confusing, innit?) filled in.

Great movie. I don't think I ever knew it was based on a real trio, 2 of which appeared in the film. I haven't seen it in years. I need to revisit that one. Brings back fond memories of watching old-time hockey with guys like Nick Fotiu & Tie Domi.

Great movie and informative post, Georg. Going thru a lean stretch in Hockeytown right now, but this brings me back to when the 'Bruise Brothers' (Probert and Kocur) roamed the ice..

Thanks a "heap" for posting this thread. I just ordered the limited steelbook bluray, due for delivery tomorrow. I'm sure that my wife will be just as thrilled as the 4 hr silent film I got last week.

What a great movie! Fun fact, Hanrahan's wife is played by the same actress as Ralphie’s mom in Christmas story.
