Most of my college days I spent playing Europa Universalis 1 and 2. Eventually I sobered up and graduated. 
It's a strategy game set in Early modern times, with an emphasis on colonization and the evolvement of the modern state, with definitely more emphasis on diplomacy than Civ. I have EU3, but haven't had the time to really settle down with it. Having a job, girlfriend, and a few other games to play kind of forces you to choose. It takes a few hours per game, and is sometimes too immersive, making you forget stuff, i. e. sleeping.
I have a spare copy, that I got from Paradox just recently of EU3. I feel I want to spread the love for this game.
