Aidan Gill - New Orleans - One man's opinion - A truly great shopping experience

I have recently ventured into the land of safety razor shaving and am truly enjoying both the experience as well as the results I am getting. My shaves and my skin in general have seemingly never looked better/smoother. Although it's been said that DE shaving will save one money in the long run, for me, that's gonna' have to be a really really really looooooong run for I've taken to this new passion/hobby like a duck takes to water.

My introductory thread:

http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showth...uot-Where-in-the-heck-have-I-been-all-my-life

I travel quite a bit on business and found myself in New Orleans this week. A city that I've been coming to about a every other month or so over the course of the last two and a half decades. With my newfound shaving hobby, I figured I'd do a little research to see where I could find some cool shaving products. My research led me to Aidan Gill. They have a shop in the Garden District as well as a second shop adjacent to Harrah's Casino in the warehouse district.

I had read the reviews/articles/yelp surrounding Aidan Gill and the general consensus was that it was a pretentious/snooty place that was grossly overpriced with respect to their shaving products. So I went in prepared for this and essentially just wanted to see what they had on hand.

Much to my surprise, the experience was nothing like what I had read. I found the staff there to be extremely knowledgeable, helpful, not too pushy or hands on, and allowed me time to browse on my own. The store on Magazine Street was extremely well stocked with all the heavy hitter brands that I've read about online; Truefitt & Hill, Castle Forbes, Geo F Trumper, Mugsoreal, D R Harris, the list goes on and on. From my online research, I had a good idea of what many of these items would cost me were I to order them online. Much to my surprise, a good number of the products were same priced as online retailers and if they weren't, they certainly weren't more than a few bucks atop the internet 'norm' if you will. This sort of blew me away. I was able to hold and smell tons of the brands/scents that to date I had only read about online.

My haul at the Magazine Street store: Truefitt & Hill 1805 shaving cream, Truefitt & Hill 1805 aftershave balm, Castle Forbes Lime, Castle Forbes Lime aftershave, Aidan Gill preshave oil, Penhaligons Talc, Silvertip badger travel brush w/case.

After having lunch in the Garden District, my wife suggested we check out the store in the warehouse district. Truth be told, I think she just wanted to hit Harrah's Casino seeing as how it was across the street. We were met with the same great reception as their store on Magazine Street. Courteous, knowledgeable, and friendly staff eager to assist.

My haul at the warehouse district store: Geo F Trumper Sandalwood, Geo F Trumper Sandalwood Skin Food, Full size Silvertip badger brush, a Mason Pearson comb, and a pack of Gillette DE blades.

Based on the somewhat negative reviews I had read on Aidan Gill, MY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE could not have been any more to the contrary. I found their prices to be on par with most online retailers I've researched. And their approach to customer service was nowhere near pretentious as I was led to believe by so many of the online reviews. I travel to New Orleans on a very frequent basis. This will be one place I will visit each and every time I'm in the Big Easy!

Well, I suspect that a year ago I would have thought the prices were outrageous, but that's because I using carts and $3 edge gel to shave! I suspect most of the reviews were by people who just don't do traditional wet shaving. They don't have a frame of reference and don't really know why DR Harris performs better than Gillette Foamy.

I am a New Orleans resident and have been to Aiden Gill on several occasions. The selection is as good as you will find and I whole heart idly agree with the PO's observation about the pricing.

I also agree the staff is very knowledgable about the products.

Then there's this.....

On my last vist which was this past Saturday, my wife and I decided to pay a visit. We were greeted by a mid 50's early 60's woman who treated me as if I were the biggest idiot In the universe with every question I had about a product. She seemed inconvenienced by my very presence. While smelling the different scents from the testers she had recommended, it became obvious the smells that were appealing to my wife and I were not the same as the ones she was selecting for us to sample.

With every scent we didn't agree with her on the attitude became more & more snooty and snarky. We were treated as cave people.

It gets better. When I asked to see a DE razor she steered me directly towards a "Aiden Gill" handle for a Mach 3. I had just a week earlier purchased a Futur from that very store from a very helpful young lady but this woman was beginning to really irk both my wife and I.

When I told her that I prefer a DE she rolled her eyes and told me "every shave we do here is with a Mach 3" as if I knew nothing. She then proceeded to ask if I had ever had a shave from them and I replied no. "Well then you wouldn't know that we won best shave in America by Esquire Magazine and Playboy now would you" she proclaimed.

The kicker....
When I told her that your owner must be very proud she simply said, "I am". Are you Aiden Gill I asked? She rolled her eyes and said she was in fact his wife!

This was my first bad experience here but it was bad on so many levels.

We were treated like incredibly well dressed vagrants stumbling in to waste her time.
She was snooty for no other reason than to be snooty.

I regret having made a purchase and giving her any of my hard earned money.

Its a shame. Good selection, decent prices, terrible attitude.

Glad yours was good. I will go back but it will be to the Fulton street location, the selection is just to good. Maybe she only works at the Magazine Street shop. Gotta love that 1805 in the pic though!

Nice looking silvertip! I wonder who makes it for them? Thx for taking the time to review this store. I am in New Orleans once in a while. Cant wait to go back for the quaint little Italian place called Irenes on Phillip st.. Really good food

Sounds like a great time in a great city! My experience was a positive one as well. I didn't eat at Manning's, though. We stopped by the oyster bar in Grand Isle and had some cold ones shucked!

Dropped back by the Aidan Gill store in the warehouse district again today after having lunch at Manning's (it's literally just across the way). Bought some Penhaligan's Endymion Shaving Tube Shaving Cream and Aftershave Balm (this stuff smells insanely awesome) as well as a Truefitt & Hill 1805 shaving soap in the bowl. Yes, I'm addicted. But hey, you only live once and you sure as hell can't take it with you, right? lol

I like Aidan Gill a lot, that's where I get my hair cut, when I have short hair. They do give a fine shave, with a Mach 3. Mr. Gill is also a semi regular at the restaurant and he and his wife have been nothing but pleasant there. Sorry you had a rough time of it. The Mag location is the original, so I would guess they spend more time there.
