Where Do You Buy Your Bitters?

Gents, I have recently experienced my first Vieux Carre cocktail and have to say it was quite oustanding. Almost a super refined Manhattan and there is certainly nothing wrong with a well mixed Manhattan. I think the main draw for me was the ultimate smoothness of the blend. I don't know if it was the brandy, the Benedictine( which I love), the Peychaud's or the whole ruddy mix. I only know this is a fabulous cocktail and deserved of its elevated status as one of the best of the best of classic cocktails. A doff of the hat and deep bow to the artist who created it.

Now we come to it. I grabbed a bottle of Rittenhouse 100 proof, M&R sweet vermouth, and had the other spirits on hand. Angostura bitters can be had at any of our local grocers but the Peychaud's is another matter. I cannot find it locally. So where do you buy your bitters?

I have noted a lot of articles and general 'bar talk' these days on forums related to bitters and wouldn't mind exploring them further. However, in the meantime getting the basic, classic brands sorted is a priority. Thank you.

I believe I bought my bottle of Peychauds at the Chicago area liquor mega-mart known as Binny's.

I've found that virtually any good or decent liquor store often has Peychauds in addition to Angostura.

I picked up a couple of bottle sof Peychaud bitters in Lancaster PA.

Some places may ship to you also.

Thank you for the replies. Indeed, the local mega spirits mart was the first place I tried. No go. And tnjs is a very well stocked store which actually gets it about quality drinks and the unusual. I was pretty taken aback they didn't have it. Strange.

Online is a crapshoot. Some Amazon selleres list it but prices aee all over and the listings aren't clear about shipping.

We've a local distiller who produces a wide variety of bitters that are available in various retail locations around town, available on Amazon.ca as well.

Dillon's – Small Batch Distillers » Bitters

dave

Dave, that is quite a nice operation there. Hadn't heard of them before but much like niche toiletries, the distilling industry is seeing the same bespoke nature of small batch makers. And personally, I am fullbore supportive of it. Dillon's has a couple of gins I would love to try.

To show you how this goes, at local spirit superstore the other day I saw a Spanish vermouth made from an Amontillado sherry base. White and red side by side with some pretty hefty accolades attached. Vermouths in this country have always been a French or Italian thing. You can bet I wil be checking out the red for Vieux Carre and Manhattans.

Sorted. I finally started calling a few more places I do not normally shop and found one with a good supply. $7 and change for the 5oz size. Will pick it up tomorrow. Done and done.

How is the Spanish vermouth? What kind did you try? I have been trying to track down a bottle of La Copa after reading a few reviews.

Bigx, haven't grabbed the Spaniard yet but I did get the Peychaud's. 7 dollars and change. My favourite spitrits store gives a 10% discount on hard spirits every Monday. They seem to treat vermouth and a couple of other fortefied wines in the same way. In fact, the vermouth section is directly adjacent to the proof liquors since their most common use is mixed drinks.

As an aside, I did a bit more searching of Spanish vermouths and found it is a very old, very popular tradition there. A number of brands exist and there are public houses specialising in it. Will let you know early next week if I manage to remember to go get it!
