What's new

How much is too much?

So Im looking for approval to buy this new Tatara, it is like $400. Just cause I can doesnt mean I should but have you seen it?

I think what you spend on anything is yours to agree upon and no one else.

You can look at something as a tool and as a form of art which gives you pleasure even if you do not use it. You decide!

I did not win the lottery last Monday and covid causes enough pain in my wallet to say nope too much at this moment and holiday destination this summer is hintergarten….

But if you can and enjoy it why not!

Should? What does "should" have to do with shaving purchases?

There are some rules, however. You can't use your children's food money. You can't rob a bank for the funds and you can't feel guilty about it afterwards.

As long as you can satisfy those rules, buy whatever makes you happy.

I want everything I see, so I have a personal rule that requires me to still want it for several months after that initial moment of desire.

Obviously we can't buy everything we want, but if you can't buy anything just because you want it going to work would seem too unrewarding. You're going to die someday, live a little.

What I heard the quality of Tatara is great yet it is a new product for them and the most complex to date. You could end up being guinea pig for V2.

Read up on the adjustables from Rex or Pearl none of them were faultless from day 1.

If you never have shaved with an adjustable I would suggest to test the waters with a Merkur Progress or a vintage Gillette Slim/Super Adjustable. Those will only set you back ~60.00 bucks.

Set a budget that you can afford for 'fun' money and spend it on whatever you want. I set aside most of my monthly fun money last year during the pandemic and was able to pick up quite a few luxury razors late last year as a result. No guilt that way. The money is there for me to spend on whatever I choose. There was a time in my life not too long ago when my answer would have been different. But today, I have no other debts other than my mortgage, and I've been paying extra on that, too, so I can spend my fun money guilt-free.

In economics, there is a concept called "opportunity cost". What it means is that any time we decide to use resources such as time or money to do one thing, it precludes the opportunity to use those same resources to do something else. Since none of us has unlimited resources, choices matter. Thus, the question to ask yourself is not "Should I spend $400 to purchase the Tatara razor?" The question you should ask is "Do I have an opportunity to use that same $400 to do something else that would provide greater benefits, both over the short term and long term?"

If your answer is that purchase of the Tatara is the best use of your resources, then you should buy it. If you see other opportunities to use that money, either now on in the foreseeable future that might be more beneficial, then you should wait.

Remember, there are always three possibilities: yes, no, and wait a while. When insufficient information is available and a decision does not have to be made immediately, waiting can be the appropriate choice. That is why car salesmen often utter the phrase "This is a one time offer; it is only available today". They do not want you selecting the third option.

Kevy shaves reviewed it beautiful crafted razor but would I cough up $400 for it...personally I would not but that's just my point of view my most expensive razor is the Rockwell 6S ($100)

At the most basic level, I guess you would have to ask yourself whether the object once purchased and in your possession would elicit a positive reaction as opposed to feelings of regret.

If you are fairly new to wetshaving, it might not be a smart or purchase without trying one first, but to each their own.

I am on the waitlist for a Wolfman razor which will be about the same $$$. If I don’t like it I know I can sell it for what I paid, so not a big deal. Not sure what resale on the new adjustable Tatara will be like as it just came out. It could be the best razor ever or could be a stinker. There is a fair amount of risk if you don’t like it is my point.

A $400 razor is a better way to spend your money than at the casino or on coke or hookers though. 👍

My wallet cries.
I guess the question becomes a "whats $400 to you" sorta question? I know for myself, I've been going kinda heavy on the acquisitions the past month or so and kinda doing a self "ok whoa", if anything just give myself sometime to sit and enjoy my goods. For example, I got a paa atomic rocket, and a soc mistura, both -not- on the Tartara level of things, but I found myself haven't enjoyed the rocket enough, nor the soc. and I wish I had more time with both.

Give it a sleep or two (or a few), let the idea sink in a bit and see if you still want it?

Maybe there is a sliding scale on hooker quality? Sorry I meant hookah

LOTH here (a saint by any standard) says, ‘This is the least expensive hobby you have ever had!’ That (very) good woman has experience with high-end stereo, fly fishing, boats and sports cars!!

More Deep Thoughts than Jack Handy
I apologize...I posted to the thread, but didn't address the OP's post. So...if there's something about that razor that appeals to you...then the only thing that's going to scratch the itch is if you purchase it. You could hope that the itch goes away, but again, if there's something about it that appeals...you'll eventually return to it and get it.

I've never paid that much for one razor, but, combined, all of my razors are more than that dollar figure. I will say however, that my absolute best razor...is not my most expensive razor. In fact, it's a sub $100 razor...the RazoRock Lupo SS SB .72. Believe it or not...for me...that razor is my R.A.D. killer. Go figure! What I'm shooting for, personally, is performance and result. I think most of the folks on these forums would have the same goal. But there are some folks that just like variety.

Good luck with your purchasing decision, comrade!
