If a razor was honed with tape on the spine, should you tape the spine to strop it on balsa? I figure it doesn't flex like leather, so maybe you wouldn't quite get to the edge if you didn't.

Yes, you should. Any non-flexible mediums (including paddle strops, even though those can be made from supple leathers) should have the same amount of tape as the honing took.

Slowly, with a side of brains.
This is one of the reasons I no longer tape my razors - refreshing the edge is now a breeze!
