Well, anyway...it's Las Vegas for a new team (hmmm...what will this team be called? 21s? Wranglers? Outlaws? Sinners?)!

"At least that appears to be where the National Hockey League is heading next year after Tuesday’s executive committee of nine owners met with commissioner Gary Bettman and deputy commissioner Bill Daly in New York to discuss expansion.

And while everyone involved has been tight-lipped on the developing situation, there is strong speculation is that the NHL will be expanding in time for the 2017-18 season.

Expansion still requires a two-thirds majority votes from the 30 owners.

As Bettman said prior to Game 1 of the Stanley Cup final in Pittsburgh, the league has three options: expand by one or two teams, defer expansion or decided not to expand.

“We will all know more after the executive committee makes a recommendation,” said Bettman on May 30. “I have no doubt that recommendation will probably get leaked in advance of the board meeting. There will be plenty of time to speculate.”

There was nothing definitive coming out of Tuesday’s closed-door meetings, but it appears that the league will be going with Option No. 1 and Las Vegas — not Quebec City — is in line to get a team for the 2017-18 season.

The formal announcement is expected to come after the June 22 board of governors meeting, which is coincidentally held in Las Vegas on the same day as the NHL awards ceremony.

It was a year ago in Las Vegas when Bettman announced plans to open up the application process for potential expansion. Only two cities came forward and from the very beginning it seemed like Las Vegas has always been the preferred destination, with Quebec City likely a strong option for relocation if a team like the Carolina Hurricanes ever decides to move.

Sin City is obviously not without its challenges — the first being location".

It appears the new T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas will soon have an NHL tenant.

While Quebec City is a market that has housed an NHL team in the past and is rich with hockey fans, Las Vegas represents yet another chance to grow the sport in an non-traditional and untapped hockey market in the Nevada desert.

Still, there appears to be a healthy appetite for hockey.

Las Vegas had a season-ticket drive that resulted in 14,000 deposits, recently built a 17,500-seat arena steps away from the strip and has a prospective owner in Bill Foley who has already written the NHL a cheque for US$2 million and is eagerly waiting to write another for US$500 million.
