Indian shaving creams reviews

I am at my hometown, and the Vi-John reacts really really bad to hard-water. Back in Delhi (normal water) it lathers up well, and retains the distinct smell.

Great thread. If anyone knows of stores in greater Chicagoland that sells these products, could you please let me know of them? These different soaps and creams make my shaving experience wonderful. This week while travelling in Barcelona some of us shavers got together and exchanged products. My buddy was with me, and he's got a basic setup from me (Super Speed, horse brush, etc). We start passing around the soaps/creams and he was blown away - and he said, " What a great way to kick off the day." The lime scents from India vsound pretty good, but now I want to try all these!

Denver like Axe are mainly competing in the deodorant market. They also have a line of hair gels, face washes and shaving foam. There is no mention of shaving cream on their site but I was lucky enough to find these 2 varieties in travel tube sizes.

An elegantly packaged tube with a pleasant fresh aquatic scent which doesn't dissipate even after lathering. A little cream is all that's required to produce a perfect lather and makes for a fine shave. It works as advertised and provides some good post shave moisturizing.

If I find the larger sized tubes of these creams I will definitely be stocking up.

I've been reading about Indian-produced shave creams, and have been using the Palmolive for quite some time. I didn't realize our local Indian population was enough to support a market for Indian products, but Google found me three, plus a Mid-eastern market that also carries Indian products. I picked up three creams, all "commonly known", but they were the total extent of what was available: Axe Denim, Dettol Original, and Godrej Original. I'll try the Denim a bit later on this afternoon, but none of the ones I bought are anything unusual or new to anyone other than myself, it seems!

Found a tube of the Vi-John two days ago, with a little difficulty.
Thank you for mentioning that. I will be addressing this fact when I review the VI-John tomorrow.

You have picked up 3 very good creams but yes, they are mainstream products and 'commonly known'. An uncle of mine swears by the Axe Denim, says it's the best shaving cream he has used in the last 40 years. He gave me a tube some time ago which I've completed and don't plan on buying again. It was a great cream but I didn't care for the scent.
Why don't you use it for a while and I'd be very pleased if you could add a review of your thoughts on Axe Denim in this thread?

A chance find while traveling though the heart of Tamil Nadu a few months ago.

This has a nice soapy floral scent and it is a top notch product.
It doesn't matter if you use a wet or dry brush, if you have hard water or soft, this cream can handle anything and lathers up with ease.

It used to be a barber's shop favourite in Tamil Nadu about 10 years ago but now is becoming a bit difficult to find.
It comes in a 125gram tube and costs Rs30(50cents). 2 other variants are available, a lime and a menthol which I have never seen.

Some more thoughts on this cream can be found here-

I have no idea! But they won't be in business if they aren't making a profit would they? Makes me wonder what the actual cost of production is?
If you want to find these creams you'll have to ask around in wholesale shops and general bazaars. You won't find them in regular supermarkets and malls. Plenty of legwork involved but more often than not you'll find something new. :thumbup1:

Ajay quest comes in 2 varieties, lime and spice with snazzy names and equally colourful tubes.
This is a recent venture of the company better known for their dental and oral care products.

Again these creams work best when the lather is 'pasty' and extra water makes them dry and unusable. The characteristics of the lather are very similar to that of Blue Stratos.

I find these to be above average performers and have had decent results with them. However I agree there are much better creams available.
These creams shine in the post shave department and leave my face nice and soft.

Price- Rs 55 for a 70 gram tube and you get a free toothbrush with every tube!

Both creams have been already reviewed here-

True. But I think they work on a pretty thin margin. Also they don't advertise, that must save them a substantial amount!

I have tried a lot of small groceries and bazaars here in Bangalore but haven't been able to find vasmol. Maybe they don't market it here.

I have however been able to find most of the creams you have reviewed until now!

Fantastic thread, gents. Chinmusic82 thanks for starting it.

Incredible wealth of information! The only problem: most of these creams are not available here. :mad3:

I think out of all these creams,Vasmol is the oldest. It was the first Indian cream I ever heard about.India seems to be like Brazil, different products sold only in certain provinces, and unknown out of the local selling area...

Thank you very much for the kind remarks gentlemen. We are honoured that you have found this thread sticky worthy.

VI-John comes in 4 varieties- regular, lime, menthol and premium according to their website.
Touted as India's number 1 shaving cream, highly advertised on television, said to be present in every barbershop in India and even has Shahrukh Khan as the brand ambassador. But apart from the regular tube I could not find the other 3 varieties.
$vijohn1.jpg$vijohn2.jpg

It has a mild pleasant incense smell and lathers up easily. But this cream requires plenty of water to keep it from drying out. As a result the lather becomes fairly thin and fluffy. It remains slippery and therefore provides good glide for the blade, but because it is so light and fluffy doesn't offer too much cushion. I invariably apply a little pressure at times and need to be careful when using this cream. I still get a close shave but need to be careful.
Fortified with Vitamin E and tea tree oil the post shave feel is very good.

Priced at Rs35(58 cents) for a 125gram tube.
Plenty of information on our site with respect to the menthol variety(which I haven't been able to find) can be found here-

If anyone has the lime and 'premium' varieties please feel free to add a review on them.(Pictures of the tube and lather would be appreciated).
