I inhereted some old stones. One is a ~7"x2" stone in an aluminum case that was very dirty. I washed it off with some dish detergend and discovered it is a Norton. However, if there was a grade marking, it has since worn off. Is there any way to identify the stone? It appears that it is NOT a dual grade stone (two glued together). it is sort of a brownish orangy color as far as I can tell (it's still a bit dirty, and I'm color deficient.)

Orange-brownish sounds like a Norton India or perhaps Queer Creek. I think both are quite coarse.

ok, since i've got nothing smart to add i'll tell you how i'd check the grit of a stone - hone something and look at the scratch marks under a microscope (before and after so that you know you're looking at the scratch pattern of that stone), their size will tell you the grit size.
Older 8k Nortons may have also had that
appearance.
