Good going! Because of my back when I was playing my swing was very limited but I played for feel instead of extra distance so I used a set of Hogan forged clubs, cavity back though, and balata balls. Yes, balata. That long ago. I loved the feel both tools gave me. My best round was a 72 or 71 but it was on a short, tight par 70 private course. My memory fails me but I think I had gotten down to a 12 or 13 handicap.Been a busy month of golf! I am going to California in December to get custom fit for Callaway clubs and play in a tournament, so I figured I should get some tournament experience first. I entered a flighted gross score tournament and temps were in the 40’s with wind and rain. Not only did I win my flight, but I was actually the low gross and net for the entire tournament with an 82. First time I’ve ever had 3 birdies in a round. And today in similar weather, I had my best score ever with a 76 and once again 3 birdies. My already personal best 11.4 handicap is trending down!
Hopefully sometime soon I can post a score. I used to be a high single digit index and then took over twenty years off. So now my much less limber 72 year old body is ill suited to my Mizuno MP-29s. I think it's nothing time on the practice range and green, lots of stretching, and maybe even some newer technology wouldn't help address. I have walked a few nines. My distances have all changed, and my swing has gone from slight draw to much straighter but with a new tendency to pull shots. It used to be that full swing wedge shots were like throwing darts. Now I hit long irons better than wedges and short irons. Golf is hilarious, but it is still the best game.
I always wished my natural swing were a fade. The courses in Austin tend to be hilly. It's a lot easier to stick a fade than a draw on a downhill shot at the green! Many holes forced me to play long approaches as bump and run because the draw topspin would just carry the ball over the green and, with my luck, into a canyon. The extra run out on drives is nice, but when you're only carrying it 220 most of the time it really does not matter that much. I did buy a newer technology driver with an R shaft and some long tees. Those really help more than anything else.I envy you your draw.
80, 85% of golfers have a fade to a slice. That's one reason most courses place trouble on the right side off the teeI always wished my natural swing were a fade. Never had a hole in one. Hit a sand wedge on a 105 yard hole with a canyon, spun it back into the canyon, and followed by backing up a soft gap wedge into the hole. But "almost" doesn't count. My hours at the range are focused on mentally playing specific holes, forcing myself to fade or draw whichever shot it needed. Your friend sounds as if he'd be fun to watch. Playing with better golfers makes me enjoy it more.80, 85% of golfers have a fade to a slice. That's one reason most courses place trouble on the right side off the tee
My best friend of over 50 years has a natural draw. He could pick up his clubs after a month or so of not playing and post a 2 over. One of the best athletes I've ever known and by far the best hand/eye coordination I've ever seen. Seven confirmed holes in one. Just amazing
That deserves a tip of the hat, a big silver cup and a large check and handshake photo op! You da gd man!My last friendly match scorecard detail is here: Front nine total is 26 and back nine total is 31 and the scorecard total is 57.
