Two more razors to go. Honed the Boker on the Old Rock Coti. I bought this stone from Gary Heywood a few years ago. The more I use it , the more I like it. I really like the edges this stone puts on my stainless straight razors.
Gold Dollar, honed on Soft Arkansas, followed by hard La Dressante Coticule.
The Arkansas stone is new. It was baught for knifes, so this is just a test run.
The hard black side needs more exploration. At the moment it feels more like a backing for the soft, which I really like.
Tim Zowada timahagane crucible steel kamisori wrapped with linen twine. One of two kamisori from a small batch of steel composed of Lake Superior Michigan iron-rich beach sand that Tim gathers using electric-charged magnets.
The kiita looks like a mess at first glance, but paired through testing it is a perfect match with the kamisori as judged by the fact that it will remove all of the 1k King scratches in 20 passes or fewer with only worn diamond Atoma plate generated slurry leaving hazy kasumi finish.
With using the AxMethod as a follow-up, I was able to develop a HHT-4 edge after 2 sets of 40 leather only on clean Kanayama leather (thanks Steve). The shave was memorable.
Gave this old boat shaped coticule a whirl. These real old stones are just a joy to hone with. Fast on slurry and slow on water. I’m certain the shave will be a good one.
This was a fun initial attempt at simply refreshing the edge of my favorite razor.
I think this is a ridiculously old coticule…feedback when honing was friendly…velvety…sublime. It’s fast on its own slurry, and I finished at the sink.
The HHT (root in) was as good as any other high end jnat, thuri, etc. I can’t wait to do the shave test!
Set the bevel with an Atoma 1200, it did a very good job. Didn’t take much either. From there it was a Chosera 3 and 5K to a Fugi 8K then a Naniwa 12K.
To finished it was a Schwedenstein with a series of dilutions using a green Thuri. The resulting edge is very nice.
Ha Rick! I was looking for a Dovo I want to use, but can’t find it…during the process I found this 6/8 Dubl Duck! Guess it will have to do for now!
The new coticule is fast on its slurry, and after a better effort than yesterday…the razor does stick to the stone when under a light stream at the sink.
Continuing to play around with the Ozuku. I'm using the tomo Maksim sent me, which I haven't used much at all as it is not that fine. I don't expect to get top rate results, but I think the base stone is good enough to get somewhere pretty nice. Last week's efforts were good, but not great, so trying some different slurry dilutions.
Yesterday's hone was pretty nice in the shave test, so now experimenting with my #2 jnat:
This is ridiculously hard and I had trouble with it when I first got it and eventually set it aside until I had more experience. It seems to be more of a polisher than a cutter so I imagine using the fairly coarse nagura I had then was not really helping. Had another go with it today with a hard nagura off a Shapton 10k. It looks promising!
