What's new

Safety Razor Acquisition Thread.

Just back from Amsterdam where my wife and I were looking to kill some time and get out of the rain and gusty winds, and happened on “Antiekcentrum” and ducked in for a look. What appeared to be a small shop just kept going and opening up wider—I picked up a Sanssouci SR, and then saw a Slim and these two, and while I wasn't sure what they were, I figured they were British, and once I saw the barber pole design, I couldn't leave them for 10 euro cash. After a bit of research, what I thought was a British Rocket appears to be a 1958 ish German Parat, and the other a 1948 British Aristocrat. The Aristocrat was grungy and soap-caked, but the Rhodium cleaned up well and I plan to use it the next shave. The Parat was used this morning and gave a good, predictable SuperSpeed shave. Finding complete sets are nice, but for me, it's all about the razors, so I have no problems picking them up when I see them.View attachment 1771739

Nice find in that shop. Eye candy jealousy. 😍

Took a ride to my local antique shop the other day. When I looked in the case there was this mint Goodwill box and my eyes lit up! When I opened it up there was a gold-plated contract Tech in there. It was not what I was expecting but I was looking for ball end contract Tech.

Score!

You are now hunting for a Goodwill, and any of the various boxes the contract Tech came in. 😆

These little loose ends that are created whenever I find a razor/case mismatch are a lot of the joy of antiquing for me.

I have a long list of things I'm hoping to locate in the wild one day to "close the loop" on some of my side quests.

It's a never-ending cycle. Enjoy!

Blackland Osprey Prospector Edition by the Razor Emporium. Matt’s shop removed all of the finishing lines on the razor, polished it up, and plated the entire razor with rhodium. The brass insert has been plated with 24K yellow gold. The sharp edges on the handle are less sharp now but still aid in maintaining grip. What a gem!

This might be my favourite marketplace score ever.

The ball end Tech is made in England. No date code but looking at Mr. Razor and based on the slots and the top logo I think 1949 or 1950. The other Tech is a made in Canada and has a W2 date code so 1951. The twist to open looks to be a Made in England Aristocrat 70 set from the 50's.

Got all three for $20. I originally just wanted the Aristocrat but looking at how well the other two cleaned up I might keep those two. I already have a 4 piece Canadian made Teck with triangle slots. Would these two be much different?

Looking more at my new Aristocrat and doing more reading, I am wondering if it might be a rhodium plated one. It's super shiny than the two techs I bought (although it is maybe 8 years newer). The only thing I really have to compare it to is my wife's engagement ring which is rhodium plated. The shine is similar to that so maybe? Any other tips to know for sure?

Congrats! Did it come in a case? It looks like rhodium plating to me (from the more widely produced 22/66 sets)
For dating look inside for the baseplate text. 'Patent Pending' = ~1950-55. 'Brit Pat 694 093' = ~1955-61
Can you see a rivet on the t-bar between the patent text? If yes then its from ~1957+ (no.70 set razors should have this)

Oh I think some jewellery polish/polishing cloths wont turn black with rhodium unlike nickel?

I got a Star Bar razor recently . I've wanted one for quite a while. So when I saw this one pop up with a really low starting bid I figured I'd throw a slightly higher bid on and see what happened. No one else bid and I got it cheap. I did quite a bit of scrubbing and sanitizing on this one. It looks like it's been a bit neglected. I wonder where and for how long it sat unused.

I smell like a Christmas pudding
I am going to make a guess but will the experts out there please confirm what I have here?

Wings on the centre bar, no engraving on the two handle bands:

My kitchen scales say 74g in weight, 430.030 on the base plate, definitely needs a cleanup..

Matt gave this razor a no bueno review. I guess his right to do that but I thought it was a little crappy. Plenty of guys like it - YMMV. I don’t have the coin to buy one right now.
