You're never gonna guess what this stone turned out to be:

My idea is they cut really gently so maybe guys weren't getting the odd deep scratch they didn't fully delete on subsequent stages that can chip out? Maybe it is the type of hone that is more forgiving of honing mistakes than most, idk...
 
Blades which habitually chipped on me were solved by using a coarse hone to cut further in to clean steel of it had some... Or raising the bevel angle if it was borderline stable.

Yes me too. If I get a chippy razor I'll hone it till I hit good metal.
