My first straight razor

Hey this is sort of a general straight razor post, but also to show what I received today from Ambrose. A few weeks ago he was selling some straights and had one for like $30 bucks. I figured for a first straight, it can't be too bad of a bet. I could try it out and if I didn't like it I wouldn't be out much. Ambrose made it a little sweeter. He said he was making strops as well. So I figured why not, I am going to need a strop right? So Thank you Ambrose. The pics don't really do it all justice.

so how did your first straight shave go?

It went well! I can see how people get into this. I set aside a hour to do what I thought was comfortable with. I was able to get a WTG pass done with no cuts, nicks or weepers, no irritation of any kind. baby steps I suppose they are called heh. I was still a little rough after the pass but this is all new to me. I gotta get used to that blade on my face. I kept lifting away because I was trying to see what I was going in the mirror. Just something I need to learn.

Overall, enjoyable.

only WTG will leave you rough usually.
ATG can get you a smooth shave , but if your beard is thick then you have to do an ATG too.
Just make sure you do good beard prep and stretch the skin well, and you will be OK.

I don't mind being a little rough to start. Since I am new to the process I am doing what I feel comfortable with. My beard is somewhat thick, but not too dense. The stretching thing is also new for me. Still trying to find which stretchs are working for me. It's fun though!
