Hmmm. Odd. Cheapo (not ideal) refills in a super pricey razor? Wow. Gotta hand it to Mühle marketing, unless I'm missing something magical?

Mühle offers in the EDITION series three distinct handles: Meissen Porcelain, Ancient Oak & Sterling Silver, and Carbon Fibre. All three handles can be had with either a DE razor head (looks like R89) or the Gillette Fusion head. Mühle offers all their handles either with R89, R41, or a cartridge system head. Interestingly, the Edition Carbon Handle with the R89 head costs $375 as opposed to the Fusion head which costs $402.

The Edition series was always the highest priced option, simply because of the material & manufacturing cost and times involved. Carbon as a material is not expensive, but the manufacturing process is very cost & time intensive and that is what drives prices high. The same goes for Meissen Porcelain. Meissen has some of the purest Kaolin clay resources at hand and produces one of the world's finest porcelains. The handle is painted and polished by hand, all in Meissen before being sent to Mühle. These are all handles where a lot of craftsmanship has been put in, and they could be considered small pieces of art; especially the Meissen handle.

I wholeheartedly agree that a $400 handle with a Fusion head is almost sacrilege and that the R89 just looks so much better on this handle, but there is probably a small market segment out there which has a demand for such a product. Maybe someone who needs a travel razor in addition to his DE razor where the cartridges can be in the carry-on?

To me a very expensive handle for a cartridge razor reminds me of an old cowboy expression: "That's a $100 saddle on a $5 horse."
