Merkur Progress - Stripped Threads ?

Another newbie question - with a blade in place is it normal to be able to turn it down past the #1 setting or does it indicate something is broken ?

I think the Progress dot on the shaft does not match up with the 1. You can turn the knob all the way down to 1 and then twist the shaft to match up if you like. It is also normal to be able to turn the knob greater than the numbers...it is kind of an odd design.

so basically you keep turning clockwise until it stops - which in my case brings it slightly to the left of 1 - and then clockwise to each numbered setting ?

Clockwise until it is completely tightened down. Counterclockwise until it's a comfortable shave for you then remember the setting.
