Note that the staff writers wrote the final episode. Also note that they were severely reprimanded by the Japanese cultural consultants during the difficult writing process for thinking "too modern." The whole series went through multiple revisions as it was too present day, but in the end the overall series was fantastic IMO.Well, a pretty good series altogether. I have to say I was very disappointed in the last episode.

The last episode really made the Shogun come off as very self centered and cold. Maybe that was the intent.
To reveal that he only kept the Anjin alive because he was entertaining, and to end the series without his attaining the goal, not seeing revenge upon those who deserved it (Ishido and the other regents), seeing the careless and needless cruelty to those who were completely innocent in the village, and ending with the assumption that all would work out as he thought was a let down after all the build up.
The Bushido moral code was certainly cold, cruel and heartless at times but still - a very disappointing end to an otherwise terrific mini-series.
