Often the question comes up on the forum what the difference is between the 2011 and 2013 versions of the Mühle R41. While the question has been answered very succinctly on the forums, I thought it would be wise to put together a definitive wiki article on all of the differences, that could be linked each time the question came up. In that vein, I bring you the following guide.
The Handle
I'll start with the easiest part: the handle. There is no difference between the two. I have seen handles with the spiral patterns going in either direction. Both models were offered first with the standard handle and the grande version, as well as the black acrylic, white acrylic and rosegold handles. None of them have any bearing whatsoever on whether the razor is a 2011 or 2013 model.
The Top Cap
Probably the most readily measurable sure-fire way to tell the difference between the 2011 and the 2013 is by measuring the width of the top cap against a US or Canadian penny. The 2013 top cap is notably wider than the 2011 version. The 2011 version measures 18.8mm across, while the 2013 version measures 20.1mm. That 1.3mm may not seem like a whole lot, but when it's covering up part of the shaving surface, it makes for a world of difference.
While many razor geeks have a set of digital calipers handy, there are a great many people in the world that do not, so how is one to measure such a small difference? The diameter of a standard US or Canadian penny is exactly 19mm. When held across the edge of the R41 endcap, a 2013 will hang over the edges very slightly, while the 2011 can fit within the diameter of the penny. The difference is not huge, but definitely noticeable. (2011 on the left, 2013 on the right)

The Baseplate
The baseplates are also remarkably different between the two different models. It takes a little practice, but it is probably the easiest feature to discern without a reference point, like a penny in the example above. It is also important to be able to identify the baseplate independent of the top cap, because it is entirely possible for someone with both models to inadvertently mix them up. As an owner, you could have a mismatched razor, and as a potential buyer, you could end up purchasing a 2011 top cap with a 2013 baseplate. Depending on whether you're looking for a more aggressive or a smoother razor, you could end up with a combination that is neither.
First off, the 2013 baseplate is wider. The 2011 is 41.4mm, while the 2013 is 42mm. The 0.6mm isn't extremely significant to the quality of the shave, but provides a very easy way to discern the two razors at arms' length.
If you look closely at the picture, the outer set of tooth-combs on the top baseplate (2013) are significantly thicker than the bottom. (2011) This is the easiest way to tell the two models apart at a glance.
There are several more measurements that can be used to discern the difference between these two models. Hopefully, I will find the time to update this article with weights, measurements and more detailed pictures.
