Z-Plus Butane Zippo Lighter Insert, great tool or blasphemy ?

Ok, so I think I'm the last guy on Earth to learn about this thing. I pulled the trigger on it just a few days ago online, so I won't get it for a few more days. My question to you gentleman is if swapping out the guts of your Zippo acceptable if means you finally get to start lighting your cigars with it ?
Also, do you still consider it a Zippo after the conversion ?

I have one and do like it. I've never thought about whether or not it's still a Zippo, but I would have say No it's not, but that never bothered me.

Thank you for your response.
The reason I ask is because I only have 1 Zippo, but it has a lot of sentimental value to me. So, I am torn between keeping it original and never using it or changing it to something other than a Zippo but using it all the time ??

Maybe keep the sentimental one original and get a similar back-up with the insert.

Mine was actually a non-brand but Zippo-style lighter that had something random painted on it. I bought a Thunderbird brand (Vector) pipe lighter (soft sideways flame) insert. Since then I have striped the paint off the casing it & modded the insert some. So I can say somewhat confidently that the lighter has character all it's own without need for a brand name.

Thought about that, but then I'm back to not using the sentimental one again.
Not sure there's a right answer for this one, but I think I would rather use it with the insert than not use it t all.

Yes, but I don't understand why you wouldn't be able to light your cigars with a zippo. I always preferred my Zippo to normal butane lighters because it throws a lot more fire around. I've stayed away from jets since I scorched a very nice pipe with one, but I can see why they would be best for lighting cigars.

No. If you are hung up on that lighter being a genuine Zippo, don't mess with it. Find any other cheap lighter of that style to swap inserts with.

I would make the conversion, but keep the original guts so that they could go back in at a later date if you should so desire.

I don't want to sound like a cigar snob, but I don't like the smell of the Zippo when I'm lighting my cigar. And right or wrong, I've always known it to be one of those cigar faux pas from the cigar community as well.

I think the "Zippo or not to Zippo" topic is probably big enough for its own thread, if there isn't one already.

I bought one of the same inserts to put in my (kinda beloved) Zippo. Honestly, while it works well and all, I put the old guts back in to the Zippo and bought a cheap jet pipe lighter. I just missed my 'regular' Zippo, and now have a pipe lighter, a cigar lighter, and an insert that I may not use again.

Yea, I know and understand the lighter fluid smell/scent issue that a butane jet would get around. I smoke to few cigars for that to stand in my way, though. I haven't poked into the serious cigar culture, but my understanding is that the real cigar aficionados will only light from a wooden match after the head has burned off.

When I said "I can see why they would be best for lighting cigars" I intended to refer to the butane jet lighters, not the Zippo. The butane jets have plenty of fire and no smell.

I have one and love it. I also have several zippos. One piece of advice: If the Z-plus is too loose in the zippo housing, wrap a piece of scotch tape around the body of the zplus to tighten up the fit a bit. Worked for me.

Yep.

Maybe one of those new Zippo Blu lighters (on that same site) which are 100% zippo, and are also blue flame Butane torch lighters, but which use the traditional striker wheel.

I have a butane insert in my Zippo, but I don't like it much. If I don't use the lighter for a few days, the butane will leak out and I have to refill. I've used the original Zippo to light cigars, and honestly never noticed any odor. Just light the Zippo and wait 4 or 5 seconds before putting flame to tobacco and it may be OK for you. It is for me.

Darn auto-correct...

i receive mine a couple of days ago, and have the same problem, butane leak out, I have to refill it each 2/3 days, crap.

"Smoking cigars is like falling in love. First, you are attracted by its shape; you stay for its flavor, and you must always remember never to let the flame go out”! Sir Winston S. Churchill

And this was one of the reasons why I wanted to try the butane, when I did use the Zippo it was so infrequent, it was always dry when I needed it.

Can you believe I haven't received it yet ? Amazon tracking shows it just left Detroit, now I know why it was free shipping.

Yep, when there's butane in the lighter, it burns HOT! First time I tried it, I burned a hole completely through my cigar!
