I'm not a huge fragrance guy either but D.R. Harris Windsor might have what you're looking for. I just had a sample in a recent order and I'm going to buy a big bottle of it soon. To my inexperienced nose it's sort of woody with citrus and leather and a bit spicy.

We open presents in a few hours, and am hoping for a bottle of Windsor, which is one of my favorite after shaves.

I also really like Penhaligon Sartorial for winter as well. I'm a big fan of Penhaligon frags, and you can buy samples from them to see what you like (or don't).

You can buy some samples on Ebay that will not set you back much. Now for some suggestions:

Terre D'Hermes, orange but not sweet. On the high side of your price range.

Banana Republic Black Walnut, only about $20, not heavy, but such a nice classy fragrance.
