What's new

Your shaving sequence

I always shave the parts of my face in the same sequence. On the few times I varied it, I felt totally discombobulated.

What about you?

1. What is your usual shave sequence?
2. Do you ever vary this?
3. Are you right or left handed?

For me, the sequence always is:

First pass, down-strokes WTG:
Left sideburn, cheek, jaw, and neck
Right sideburn, cheek, jaw, and neck
Chin and throat
Left upper lip, then right upper lip.

Second pass, up-strokes ATG:
Exactly the same order, except neck before cheek, and throat before chin on the up-strokes.

I'm right handed.

I'm right handed. I tend not to vary my sequence, although from what I've read here it may be an odd one and one that I thought I would have trouble with but have not.

I shave from the left side of my face to the right, starting at the bottom of my neck using an ATG pass. I go through the neck and then up over the jaw and through the rest of my face. I do the chin, lower lip, and mustache areas last. Then I re-lather and touch-up, using my hand and the lather to feel what areas need additional work.

Left cheek with N-S downstrokes from ear to corner of mouth.

Right cheek in exactly the same way.

Chin.

Right side of neck WTG.

Left side of neck WTG.

Moustache area.

Then relather for the XTG pass.

And yes, I always do it the same exact way.

I vary quite a lot. For example if it's cold and I'm shaving with a tee shirt on I'll start at the bottom of my neck and work my way up to reduce the chances of messing up the shirt. Without a shirt on I'll leave the tougher bits till last so they soften. (With good prep the order doesn't matter too much so I'm flexible.)

1. I do one WTG, one XTG, and one ATG pass. For all passes, I shave the right side of my face, the left side of my face, my throat directly below my chin, my chin, and then my upper lip.

2. No.

3. I am right-handed.

I, too, always use the same sequence. It's the one I developed during my first 11 months of DE shaving, and it works well for me when I have the time, which is most times. With the right razor, blade, etc., I get a BBS shave nearly always. It's a modified method shaving sequence.

I'm left-handed and do it all with that hand:

First pass, down-strokes WTG:
Left sideburn, cheek, jaw
Right sideburn, cheek, jaw
Chin and throat
Left upper lip, then right upper lip.

Second pass, down-strokes, 45 degree angle, ear to chin
Left side of face
Right side of face
WTG chin, neck, upper lip L & R

Third pass, horizontal strokes XTG:
Left side face, L to R
Right side face, R to L
Left side neck and chin, L to R
Right side neck and chin, R to L
Left upper lip, R to L
Right upper lip, L to R

Fourth pass, up-strokes ATG
Left cheek, jaw
Right cheek, jaw
Left neck
Right neck
Left upper lip, then right upper lip.

I do a four-pass method because my skin can get irritated, and good beard reduction seems important before my going ATG.

I hope this helps and you've not gotten more than you asked for.

Pass One -

Left undercheek + cheek = South to North.
Right cheek = East to West.
Right undercheek = East to West.

Pass Two -

Left undercheek = East to West.
Right undercheek = East to West.
Chin and throat area = S/E to N/W.

Pass Three -

General touch-ups. Repeat all previous strokes. This is also the time where I do the moustache area.

Variance? Sometimes. This isn't really a fixed pattern, but I start on the left and work my way to the right and then back again just out of habit.

I'm right-handed all the way. I tried shaving with my left hand once and I very quickly found out why they're nicknamed "Cutthroat" razors.

Here's my sequence:

First Pass
  • Neck: South to North
  • Face: North to South

Second Pass:
  • Neck: North to South
  • Face: XTG Back of Face to Front

Third Pass:
  • Right Side of Neck: East to West
  • Left Side of Neck: West to East
  • Face: XTG Front to Back

Fourth Pass:
  • Neck: Blade Buffing and/or J Hooking
  • Face: South to North

About the only consistent thing I do in shaving is I start with my Right Cheek. From there, I am not really consistant with the section of my face/neck that I work on.

For my direction of shvaing from pass to pass, I always go:
1st Pass:
Cheeks and Chin: N-S (WTG)
Neck: N-S Angled from Ear toward Chin (WTG)
Throat: N-S Angled Left to Right

2nd Pass:
Cheeks: E-W from Face to Ear (XTG)
Chin: E-W or W-E, doesn't really make any difference (XTG)
Neck: N-S Angled from Face to Ear (XTG)
Throat: N-S Angled from Right to Left

3rd Pass:
Cheeks, Chin, Neck and Throat: S-N

4th Pass (Touch Ups):
Under Chin: S-N angled from Right to Left
Just under Jaw Line: E-W from Chin to Ear

I am Pretty much ambidextrious so I use which ever hand works best for the side of the face and angle that I'm working on.
