ALT INNSBRUCK!

I'll limit myself to one in each category, except that I'll cheat and break out 2 razor categories  --

Razor: Any straight (at the moment straights are still completely foreign to me, but I MUST try one before I shuffle off this mortal coil).

DE razor: Cooncatbob's Bull Mastiff with a New head (this will probably be my next hardware purchase).

DE blade: Swedish Gillette.

SS: Penhaligon's.

AS: Osage Rub.

Nice thread, OGI.

Only 3 things left on my list of things to obtain and try out and all 3 are super unlikely.

1. DePew The Perfect Razor
2. Silver Gillette Toggle Prototype
3. Darwin DE razor

Razors

  • 40's SuperSpeed
  • Red Tip
  • Old/New Gillette

Blades

  • Sharks
  • Feathers
  • Dorco ST-301

Soaps & Creams

  • Tabac
  • Indian Shulton Old Spice Cream
  • VDH Deluxe

Aftershaves, colognes

  • Vintage Old Spice/dollar store version
  • Bigelow Bay rum balm/cologne
  • Generic Witch Hazel
  • Florida Water
  • Pinaud Clubman Bay Rum

Various

Reasoning:

Razors - The two TTO's are my favorites, the vintage three pieces so you can know where all this came from.

Blades - Sharks are good and cheap, Feathers are excellent and famous, Dorcos are ultra cheap and they might work for you!

Soaps & Creams - Tabac is a gold standard, the Indian OS is a good cream with a nod to the past for OS fans, VDH is good, cheap glycerin.

AS & Colognes - Pretty much personal preference, but the you gotta try the WH and FW 'cause they are so inexpensive, and the OS is US shaving history.

Various - Mantic is a must view, PIFing is good for the soul and your shaving Karma, proper prep is the key, see the sig.

It's amazing how hard it is to keep a list like this sort of short.

On my list, all pending budget and funds:

Razors - an open comb model TBD
Soaps - Tabac, DRH Arlington, Kabinet (a German, somewhat rare), Rose (brand TBD)
Creams - Rose (brand TBD), J.M. Frasers
After Shaves - Tabac, DRH Arlington, Alt Innsbruck

Antique Hoosier

“Aircooled”
If my "gotta try" list is my highest recommendations for new and old badgers alike to try it would be the following:

Any well honed Sheffield Straight Razor from the 1800's

Plisson HMW Badger Brush

TABAC
Geo. F. Trumper Rose Soap
Mitchell's Wool Fat Soap

Alt Innsbruck Aftershave Splash

Blades: NOS Gillette Thins

Creams: Penhaligon's (all) Castle Forbes (all), Perhaps Floris as well. I don't use soaps anymore so no soap for me.

Unfortunately, I can't think of a razor or brush that I need/want to try. Come to think of it, perhaps that is fortunate.

I'm in the same boat bladebuff:frown: do to being unemployed and no unemployment checks coming in. However on the bright side, I had enough to buy a good "New" with a box ($4.00). I traded the box for a SS a chip of soap and a pak of Derby blades. I used the soap sample and now have gone back to using up the rest of my aresol shaving cream.
I would like to try:
Razors:
1- bob'sblades Bull Mastiff
1- Gillette Tech
Soaps:
Col. Conks
Tabac
MWF
AS:
Osage Rub

Hopefully some day soon here I will find work and start getting the things I have on the list. Till then priorities are food, shelter and keeping the wolves away from the door.

All that is left for me is Santa Maria Novella shave cream and a Maestro Livi, or Bill Ellis for that matter, straight.

Razors:
ANY straight!

Preshave Products:
Proraso Pre/Post (even if you feel it doesn't do anything for you, it's worth having an opinion of!)

Soaps:
MWF and Tabac

Shaving Creams:
Body Shop (I think this seems like an odd one, and I don't know what it is, but this cream lathers up SO quickly and perfectly for me)

Aftershave Products:
Osage Rub & 444
Floid!

EdTs:
Floris 89 (At the moment, I'm a little too into this scent)

Two things I think most people would like a lot if they try them are:
  • GEM 1912 SE razor
  • Cella soap
I prefer the GEM 1900/1901 to the 1912 but they are pricey, hard to get, and mostly nicer just for their looks (but I also like their lighter weight).

I have other things I like personally but see little reason others would prefer them over other similar and popular alternatives.

You gotta try:

Omega boar brush. Unbelievably great.

VDH Deluxe soap. Best value out there.

Making your own aftershave. It's easy, it's cheap, and you can make a really nice one.

Kai blades. Sharp and smooth. Best blade I have tried (but the list is short).

How do you make your own aftershave?
