I've been looking at my music collection, and as big as it is, most of the artists are no longer recording, or even no longer with us in this mortal coil....

So I'm thinking, maybe I need to listen to some new stuff. I'm not talking the latest top 40 rubbish. I'm talking contemporary artists who will probably last the test of time. Who are your picks of the current crop who are doing good, or at least interesting music these days?

FWIW, my pick goes to The Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. I've loved all their albums so far.

Edit: I should say, a lot of the stuff I like is by artists who are still active, but have been around for an age (Nick Cave, David Bowie, Metalica, Tom Waits...) But let's try to keep it to artists who can't remember the 70's. And by that I mean, can't remember because they are too young, not because they were having too good of a time.

Great thread to start, David. Love the idea!

currently, I've been mining my Amy Winehouse playlists. Have always loved the "queens" of old school jazz (Ella, Sarah Vaugan etc) but Amy just seems to be singing my tune lately; dark and moody.

Oh, and old Joy Division too...

LOL. Neither Amy or Ian Curtis are doing their best work these days. Points for taste, but I need more of a pulse.

I really like Nick Cave. He's good enough to pass as a poet. A good few levels above all the other contemporary singers.

Good question. Who is out there these days? I don't really know anymore.
I turn on the radio just to turn it off 2 seconds later.
The last record I bought was Stone Sour's Audio Secrecy.

The new AIC wasn't any good. I was really pumped up for it.

I'm going to keep an eye on this one. I need to find something new.

Baroness, Beirut, The Black Keys, Calexico, Chairlift, Destroyer, Drive-By Truckers, Field Music, Fly Golden Eagle, Foals, Murder By Death, My Morning Jacket, Of Montreal, Savages, Tedeschi Trucks Band, Twin Shadow, Wovenhand and Janelle Monae

I've been really enjoying Iron Maiden, Three Inches of Blood, Blind Guardian and Professor Elemental lately. The last fellow sings "Chap-hop" so hip hop but with more of an english/steampunk theme to it.

I guess that I am the oddball here or, showing my age a bit. But, even though I have always considered Led Zeppelin my favorite band of all time, I have been on an all Country kick. I love Johnny Cash and George Jones but also like some of the new Country that is out there too.

Perhaps I could sum it up as a bit of an eclectic mood because I also listen to Ralph Stanley and some of the big band music of the 1940's especially when I am shaving!

The black keys, crossfade, mark david manders, breaking benjamin, seether, chromeo, rick ross.

Just a few that are on the top of my playlists.

Broken Social Scene, Arcade Fire, LCD Soundsystem, Bombay Bicycle Club, The Sheepdogs, Do Make Say Think, Lucero, Modest Mouse, The Albertans, FM Belfast, Deer Tick, Land of Talk, Gold & Youth, Hot Chip.

Honestly, I can't think of any that fit your criteria. I've always listened to older music, and only get into "current" music about 20 years after the fact. Buckcherry, maybe, but I haven't listened to anything of theirs since Black Butterfly.

I also really like 3 Inches Of Blood... Striker and Skull Fist are good metal too. For other stuff I really like "Larry And His Flask" they're kind of like a Bluegrass-Punk band and put on one heck of a live show.

Nice, Jamie actually is my cousin, I found out about the band from my Aunt and Uncle after their first album was released.

My Bloody Valentine--going to see them in November.
Sam Phillips--she just self-released a new album.
Wilco and Radiohead are always a step or two ahead of everyone else.
Los Lobos
Guided By Voices
Though I've never been a huge Jack White fan, I just saw him on "Austin City Limits" and found his performance really exciting.

Tool is by far my favorite. Also like slipknot, killswitch engage, rise against

I'm a drummer and I used to think the last three bands were just noise until I started trying to play there stuff, pretty cool if you actually listen
