Your 2-3 best creams regarding: Different factors

Hello gentlemen,

I am thinking of buying some new creams and I would like to see some input from you regarding my upcoming purchase.

If you would be willing to share with me, and the rest of the community which chreams you care for the most when coming to:

  • Moisturising properties/Protectiveness/slicknes
  • Scent
  • Overall Quality

I dont want to be rude, and I know there is a review page. But because you guys sit on a bunch of information and I am still new to this world. Only been into this for 2-3 months. Your reccomendations would help me a lot.

As a sidenote;
  • I love Musgo Real and the overall quality regarding scent, latherability, slickness.
  • L`Occitane CADE shaving cream has a wonderful scent, but the latherability is a bit, meh, and its expensive.
  • Proraso Green (new formula) gives me great shaves, but Im not a huge fan of the smell.
  • T&H Sandalwood, is also another one that is great when it comes to the results of a shave, but not a big fan on the scent.
  • Trumpers Coconut offers a very nice slickness and moiustirising properties, but the scent is a bit too much.

Overall I am looking for decent priced shaving creams without citrus and menthol scent.

Thank you, in advance for your time and feedback! :001_smile

    Sincerely
    Marius

I too love MUSGO, and its hard to find something that beats it. TOBS Avocado comes close! Very slick, very moisturizing, very awesome! It does NOT smell like avocado, more like cucumbers or fresh grass, but very pleasant. Also, as far as creams go Trumpers Lime is awesome, but its very lime like (which I love, but you mentioned no citrus). Its gonna be hard to find something to beat musgo in a cream, i have yet to. Like i said above, the only CREAM to come close is TOBS (Avocado and Lemon/Lime are the only ones ive tried) and the only software that beats musgo is Mikes Natural Barbershop. So, good luck with your search, i personally rotate Arko, musgo, avocado, lime, and barbershop depending on moods and weather (musgo more colder weather, arko year round, avocado and lime warm weather, and barbershop is anytime i need an amazing shave) Just my $0.02.

I'd recommend GFT coconut it has a nice confectionery like coconut smell, it whips up into a nice thick lather with plenty of cushion and thanks to the coconut oil it is nice and slick providing plenty of glide, protection and moisturization, IMO I'd give the edge to GFT over Musgo, both of which I own. TOBS does some nice creams too, they are on par with GFT for a more affordable price, sandalwood is one of my favorites though some find the fragrance too over powering and those with really sensitive skin find it irritating. I have gotten the new TOBS coconut cream and will be doing a half and half shave comparison with GFT tomorrow. So far I've compared the fragrances, if you think coconut might float your boat check out my thread and see my review

Try Cella, its more of a croap but it gets put in the cream category. I tried Cella for the first time the other night and WOW is all I can say. GREAT performer. Also try Queen Charlotte Soaps creams. My favorites are the Queen Charlotte and Rose Otto scent so far(I've only tried a handful of them). I just posted this info in a similar thread. I stand behind those recommendations!

This is very subjective of course but for me when the words "best" and "cream" are used in the same sentence, Castle Forbes has to be there at the top. They are great performers with wonderful scents and though expensive on the front end, are a good value because they last so long. GFT creams are top notch as well with my favorites being coconut and Violet. TOBS creams, pick your scent, are excellent values as well. T&H creams are great performers as well. So to narrow it to three is difficult but these are my favorites,

1. CF lavender (Lime is a close second)
2. GFT Violet (coconut is a very close second)
3. T&H 1805 (Grafton is a very close second)

Regards,

Doug

For performance Musgo is my favorite. It's incredibly slick and cushiony. I always get a great shave from Musgo. As for scent, there are lots of really nice ones out there but my favorite is eShave Verbena Lime. Disclaimer: I love lime scents and I also love Verbena (use French Verbena soap a lot). So the combo of the two is irresistable to me.

La Toja Regular or Sensitive SC, a rich cream out of the tube, with a non-cologne soapy scent, The Sensitive produces a wonderfully thick and rich lather while also containing mineral salts for superior skin care. i use mine for test lathering brushes etc. funny, to my nose, it's way to perfumy scented. it doesn't smell like anything specific, it's just overpoweringly a bad scent

my top 3:

CF Lime. great scent, performance and moisturizing
QCS Creams. choose a scent or get a custom, they all perform the same. easy to lather, performance and quality are top notch.
RR Classic. dirty cheap, top performer. can't go wrong, very strong cherry/almond scent.

For me, Proraso Green is the best protective/moisturizing cream I use. Red is close behind

CF Lime is my favorite scent.

  • Moisturising properties/Protectiveness/slicknes - I Coloniali 'Silver' & Acca Kappa 1869 pot & Musgo Real & Santa Maria Novella & O Melhor
  • Scent - Castle Forbes Lime & AOS Sandalwood & DR Harris Windsor & Acqua Di Parma & Taylor of Old Bond Street Jermyn Street
  • Overall Quality - Xpec & Truefitt & Hill Ultimate Comfort & Geo F. Trumper Coconut & Castle Forbes Lavender & Proraso Red (Proraso Red is here because you get a fantastic product for a very fair price)

You've pretty much tapped out my favorites

Trumpers coconut oil cream (about the only Trumpers cream I recommend. Scent is worth putting up with for the performance)
Truefitt & Hill (grafton is my favorite scent but scent is a personal point for most)

Kiss My Face is one of the tops for me but it is a US product and might be hard for you to find at a reasonable cost where you are located.

I use aftershave balms for moisturization, so my first category is:

Protectiveness/slickness:
Acca Kappa 1869 cream (in the tub, not the tube)
RazoRock King Louis (lavender)

Scent:
Acca Kappa 1869 (lightly-sweetened almond)
Castle Forbes lime (they have other scents, too)

Overall:
Acca Kappa 1869
RazoRock King Louis

Acca Kappa 1869 will change how you think about lather.

If you like how TOBS shave quality but don't care for the sandalwood I'd try the St. James. it has a modern cologne type scent, I don't know if I'd say it was aquatic but it does remind me of one at times. My favorite is Avocado, the shaves I get from it are amazingly slick and my face is very moisturized...but the scent is very polarizing, sort of like fresh cut grass and cucumbers. A lot seem to hate it, so YMMV. Cella is also good, if you're into croaps..it has a cherry/marzipan scent though, which can turn some people away.

I really wish I had more to say about my massive collection. It seems like the majority of my collection performs very well and I enjoy using each product. On the off chance I get a stinker, I usually just chuck it into the garbage. I've only done this twice (VDH and EJ hard soap). The rest perform very admirably with even my lower end creams performing very close to to my higher end creams.

Moisturing -- Any Edwin Jagger cream. These moisturize to the point of almost feeling geasy. Nancy Boy -- very nice. Cella (croap, but similar). I wanted to add a note about TOBS...these creams are probably the least moisturizing creams I have in my stash, but they still provide a decent shave. Because they smell so good, I still enjoy using them.

Scent -- TOBS Mr Taylor, Musgo Real, any DR Harris This is highly subjective, but I find myself gravitating toward barber shop scents. Honorable mention to Mama Bear's Ye Olde Barbershoppe...heavenly!

Overall quality -- Art of Shaving, Castle Forbes, Cyril Salter.
