This is hopeless....

Todd, when I was a youngster, we lived in Lubbock, Texas. We saw Tennesee Ernie Ford at the Fair.

Tough question and not an easy one to answer with three groups per genre. There's so much music out there it's hard to actually try out the majority that may seem interesting. I will list 2 genres and one "Other" since I listen to them quite alot as well.

Classical and Progressive Rock:
- The Gathering
- Ayreon (you really should try this out, this is a brilliant musician)
- Pink Floyd

Trip-Hop
- Endless Blue
- Portishead
- Massive Attack and Lamb share the 3rd place

Other
- My Dying Bride (Doom metal but the calmer albums are brilliant)
- Norah Jones (Leaning towards Jazz)
- At this time anything from Yo-Yo-Ma

I'm still discovering the whole classical and jazz music genre. I prefer mainly piano, violin and cello solo pieces. There's so much to choose from! I love female opera as well.

Metal:
In Flames
White Zombie (Rob's alright, but when he hijacked the band name, it lost a lot of flavor)
Nightwish

hip-hop (NOT rap...all that "cap this cap that" crap makes me want to choke someone):
DJ Shadow
Jurassic 5
Beastie Boys
Gorillaz

Rock:
Nickelback
Santana
Sublime

Electronic:
Priodigy
KMFDM
Aphex Twin
NIN (I had to edit these guys in...I slapped myself for forgetting to put them in here...I have the entire collection for pete's sake!)

Those are my favorite genres, but I also like Classical (Grieg is my favorite composer), Blues (John Lee Hooker is my favorite in this category), and even though I in general dislike contry music I am a huge Johnny Cash fan. I find his music has a lot of soul to it, which I like.

Ahhh... it seems I'm the strange one!

Death metal:
Cannibal Corpse
Suffocation
Amon Amarth
Cryptopsy
Behemoth

Melodic death / Other:
Opeth
Dimmu Borgir
In Flames
Katatonia
At The Gates

John Vanderslice is great. I have his latest album, Pixel Revolt, which is very impressive. Quite the studio wizard.

We are lucky enough to have every one of his albums (and all of MKUltra) on vinyl. He is one artist that I almost never tire of. Another great thing is that he comes to Orlando very regularly!

I'm a big fan of the Ayreon CD, but it isn't the name of the musician. Arjen Lucassen is the artist who organized the Ayreon cd, which has some really awesome voices on it (Devin Townsend, James Labrie).

Thank you John for making it clear. I forgot to change that but the Ayreon concept in general is brilliant.

There are alot of great singers who are on Arjen's wait list to get a chance to star on his future albums.

Geez, I couldn't even list it all as my tastes are so diverse. I like just about everything except the modern country stuff - love the traditional though.

Jazz:
Wynton - Black Codes = most excellent
Miles - what an artist
Monk - ditto
Bill Evans - put me on a desert island with Sunday at the VV
Horace Silver - I love this guy

Classical (just a small sampling...):
Beethoven - string quartets, piano sonatas
Brahms - violin concerto, clarinet concertos
Chopin - one of my favorites, ah the ballades (esp #4)
Bach - Goldberg variations (Glenn Gould's both sets)
Granados - Me loves the Spanish Dances
Mozart - piano sonatas, piano concertos, string quartets
Schubert - about everything

Modern stuff (just a few...):
Franz Ferdinand
Neko Case
Clap Your Hands and Say Yeah
OK Go
Hem
Beck
Cake
Barenaked Ladies
Guster
Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Radiohead
Ben Harper
Jack Johnson
Tragically Hip
Eminem
Clem Snide
Beastie Boys
Foutains of Wayne

check this site out: http://aurgasm.us

Country/alt:
Whiskeytown
Kenny Chesney
Lucinda Williams
George Strait

and I grew up in the 70s with older siblings so add all that 60 and 70s rock, soul and R&B - too much to list.

Dennis

Indie:
Tegan and Sara
Spitfires & Mayflowers
Modest Mouse

Alternative:
Our Lady Peace (early albums)
Matthew Good
Poe

Classical:
Beethoven
Rachmaninov
Berlioz or Shostakovich

Boy, I read the names on some of the lists and don't recognize a one! Am I ever getting old. . .:frown:

You are missing out on some good music then (says the close to 40 guy...). It is tough to keep up as I get older though as well as it seems there is alot of crap out there, but working with college age kids helps especially if you are on the same music wavelength as them. I find checking on music blogs helps expose me to stuff I might not be familar with otherwise. NPR still comes through for me two with good interviews on surprising bands and artists that I thought they would never interview.

Does it make you feel any better to know that I, a 23 y/o male, can say essentially the same thing? I recognize some of the names, but I couldn't tell you what they sing, the names of their hits, their genre, etc. But then I am really not an audiophile.

I can sure sympathize with those who feel old. I went to The Who's "farewell concert", in Sept, 1982. They're still touring.

My musical claims to fame are having an old girlfriend sing on stage with Frank Zappa, and having Roger Waters perform on stage wearing my shirt. Long stories, both.

My only real memorable concert moments involved everyone being escorted out by riot cops....twice.

The second, and less amusing one was at a Pantera concert back in my home town of Ft. Wayne, Indiana...the mosh pit got a bit out of hand, and people were pulling up the removable floor panels, revealing the ice below (the colliseum is also a hockey rink)...so the pit was now on ice, and the removable flooring was being used as crowd surfing boards. The police were less than amused.

The first one was the most amusing....mosh pit got broke up by riot cops....the amusing part was this was at a christian metal concert of all places.

What happened was a cop tried to break it up, and he pulled out his baton...someone didn't realize he was a cop, grabbed the baton, and then did an about face and ran backwards through it (for some reason it was this weird circular mosh pit....never seen anything like it again.

Oh, and at that same concert, my bud george got kicked out for crawling inside of one of the subwoofers near the stage

....yeah, I was a rather misbehaved person in my highschool days.

Hey, I'm a college music teacher--which may define the term "out of touch," now that I think about it!
