What's new

Yet another crazy ebay auction.or two!

I've been watching quite a few ebay auction listings related to DE razors (what else?!) and there were a couple that interested me, one for a Gillette President and another one for Diplomat. Having scored a wrongly titled and worded Gillette President myself, I was curious to know how much these went for, and the end result?

The Gillette President went for a crazy 182.50$, that too for an uncased president!

The Gillette Diplomat went for 154.50$!

Both of the items are from the same seller and the seller seems to know how to clean up the razor and take very good looking pictures of them!

Am I the only one that thinks these are crazy prices or is this within range for such razors?

This sellers auctions have been discussed on here before. He has very nice items and knows how to list them. From what I've heard from members who have purchased from him, they were pleased with the product.

Been watching a few of the UK OC TTO gillette auctions and got to say the prices have just been going up and up. I'm maxing out at £45 plus P+P but some are going for £60 plus and then postage. Mind saying that I asked a guy in the US yesterday about his postage on a Gillette lady in pink that was going for around $40 and he actually asked for $46 postage to the UK? forgive me but that seems a little high even for recorded signed for. Needless to say it aint in my watch list no more.

I know of a few guys who have purchased razors from him and who were very pleased even though they paid top dollar. I saw one FB he bought that looked brand new. Another razor I saw was a great looking Red Tip.

£60 for a UK OC TTO? Bargain! All the Aristocrats I watch go for around £100 these days, even the user grade/UK only auctions.
Add £20-£60 for a replate and it's the same ball park as a high end stainless steel razor (£150) Which is not that bad tbh...

Dawin should start making the deluxe/standard again :001_cool:

Ah! He's using my drying mat idea in his pictures! the texture reflected on the doors really makes the finish pop.

I want to know how he procures these razors so often.

When on Ebay I always sort by price plus lowest first. The cheapest razor that looks in good working order gets my bid. Its too easy to do my own cleaning and polishing etc. to pay someone else to do it.

The price on the Diplomat set really isnt that bad. I think that is what they are worth in very good condition, about $125-$150

As would I. Perhaps he has an inside track to collections. I know a coin dealer who always seems to get the call when a collection is liquidated. I would guess collectors of everything, including shaving gear, know where to sell their collections.

Thanks for your response guys. After posting this thread, I did search for cedarfurnitureman in B&B and it seems that there are polarizing views about the seller. While they seem to clean up the razors very well and take very good looking photographs of them, to be fair to them they do not set reserve prices in the auctions (at least the ones I have seen). So the prices are really determined by bidders who in quite a few cases seem to be getting into an emotional bidding war since the pictures and description seem to make them look new or as if it just came out of the factory!

Man, I just got a cased 48-50 Aristocrat NOS for $81 bucks and a Diplomat cased for $61. The Diplomat has a few minor scratches on the head, but the plating is gorgeous. The Aristrocat did have the wrong instructions, but I though it was still a great price for a razor in that kind of shape.

Personally...I wouldnt pay 182.50 for ANY razor..let alone an old one!

To each one his own, but there are a few collector grade razors like the eclipse red ring razors or fat boy toggle razors for which one would have to pay top dollar to add them to their collection. Its akin to buying restored vintage cars which would cost more than a brand new car. For some, collecting vintage / antique items be it razor or cars has its allure.

Quite so, since they seem to do a very good job of restoring / polishing up the razors.

There were quite a few British OC TTOs in ebay UK site and I've had them in my watch list. Most of them went above 100 GBP and there was one that ended a few moments ago which went up to 104 GBP yet did not meet the reserve set by the seller! Despite this, I managed to win one British OC TTO for well less than 100 GBP - only that the case appears to be somewhat beat up but the razor itself is in a very good condition.

They also do consignment auction, i.e., they sell other's razors and take a cut from the final sale. As I understand from one of the threads in B&B, their cut is as high as 50% of the winning bid.

Just wonder has James bonds skyfall got some thing to do with it, be like him.

James Bond shaved with a straight in Skyfall. However, it may have had a rub off effect on the DE razor auctions in ebay!

Perhaps I have been spoiled by B&B as I purchased a cased Diplomat from the BST thread for $49 couple of days ago. The case and razor are in very good condition too!

That is a very good price, and yes you have been spoiled lol.

I have got some great deals like that too here and there both on the BST and Ebay. They are far and few between though.

Prices on most of the deals in BST here are fair. On ebay though, its buyer beware!
