wrist watch websites - french, swiss, german marques

Can somebody please direct me to suitable websites? My attempts on the internet have been ineffectual. I am searching for a design, make and marque. I have seen several in magazines (French names) but can not recall them. They may even be made in Switzerland.

1. white/cream face
2. analogue - automatique
3. may or may not have multiple dials
4. black or blue hands
5. rectangular face (though not averse to round)
6. readable in poor light
7. 'brown' leather strap

There are more makers than I considered possible. I want this to be a lifetime watch, and budget and marque are hard to estimate at this stage.

Form, function and quality dominate over price.

Thanks for any assistance in directing me to suggested marques, sites, groups etc.

The problem is there are hundreds probably so if someone gives you a name it will only be their favorites. Your combination is very common really. How about-breitling, hamilton, Seiko,Sinn,JLC,Lange just for starters

timezone.com is the B&B or basenotes of the watch world, except possibly more so.
They have almost thirty separate active brand forums, amongst others, and two very busy sales forums.
All my horological referencing begins here.

watchnet.com is another reliable, versatile site, albeit smaller scale.

seiko (grand?), orient (star?), archimedes, stowa antea, nomos tangente, A. Lange, Longines, IWC, Panerai.

In order of increasing expense.

There are literally hundreds more, but those are likely the easiest to come bye.

How are Panerais and Longines more expensive than Langes?

Meistersinger?

Still pretty affordable, IMHO.

i saw on ebay a 30s Stowa. Very nice style, kind of the rectangle 'style' in mind (a round watch is also necessary  ). I wish Stowa had that style again. Of current Stowa, the Antec is nice with bauhaus inspiration. (though after reading FLtiger, I do concede the maritime is gaining preference) I do like the hands on the marine romeon. much to look for.

btw, can a Stowa be read in the dark? or is it complete blackout?

I notice a feature (chrono cosc) for 177 euro for the Stowa....what is the purpose of that, and does it alter the appearance of the dial? must I avoid water and magnets with them?

price range....I'd say Stowa to twice that at the most.

If by "chrono" you mean "chronograph", then that's a feature used to time things. Basically, any watch with a timing feature is a chronograph.

You need to avoid water depending on how deep the watch is rated for. No watch is water proof, some are "water resistant". If a watch is rated to, say 100 feet, that doesn't necessarily mean it will resist water at 100 feet. Over time watches also lose their ability to resist water.

Magnets are bad for a watch, however, unless you work in an environment where many magnets are present, most magnets won't damage your watch.

thanks Matthew. magnets and water will not be a problem. Yes, I was just interested in the cosc chronograph feature for purpose and appearance and if a a marine or antea Stowa can be read in dim or dark.

I do not know if they can be read in the dark. Lume (or luminous phosphorescen) needs to be in the watch for it to be read in the dark. See if the watch has that.

COSC means that the watch was sent to Contrôle Officiel Suisse des Chronomètres, which tests watches for accuracy. Most watch enthusiasts would agree that COSC is nothing but a selling point for watches. Many of the best watch brands never send watches to COSC.

here is a post i made up for another site. i never did complete it but should keep you busy for a while, some of the sites may have changed by now, but the links will at the very least get you close.
