Would like to get 2nd razor

I have been DE shaving just over 2 weeks. I have been getting DFS with occasional BBS(mostly a lather thing) using a Merkur 34C. Being bitten by the DE bug I would like to get a second razor to rotate with my 34C
Because my Grandfather came from England I would like a vintage British made razor. However I have very little knowledge of vintage razors so please help with suggestions.

The plan will be to keep the shaving den small so I am going to limit myself to 3 razors. Everyone at B&B has been great but after seeing some of the shaving den photos I thought set limits now. (you should see my camping & bicycle gear room) The third razor might be new some of my thoughts were:
EJ89l: great price now at The English Shaving company
Merkur Slant
Bob's Razor Works: they all look great

Thank you B&B
Chris

Ahhh, sure, set your limits now. That is a good plan. That bike and camping gear acquisition disorder will never bleed over into razors.

:biggrin1:

English razors can be pretty pricey, unless you want to go for a English made tech. Those are pretty nice, I think. If you get one in a bakelite case, then you got something. Then you go to the Rockets, Aristocrats, etc.

Oddly, I don't know anything about modern razors.

In Gillette under the ENGLISH section, the British razors are listed.
Each one opens a Wiki page with a description and a photo.

Happy hunting!

That is what scares me.
I have too many packs, tents, 4 bikes and at least 15 different stoves. On the bright side my shaving den will take up less space

Save the money and buy a nice English Aristocrat. It doesn't have to be museum quality, as long as it is mechanically good, it'll do the job.

Does it have to be vintage? The EJ DE89L is English, affordable, and so good you might not want to buy a third razor. RAD put about 20 razors in my cabinet, but the DE89L gets used more than anything else.

for a se try a rolls razor , valet auto strops were made in enland too both are very cheep to find compared to aristocrats ball end techs are good too and somewhat cheep but good shavers

My favourite British razor to use is the Rocket HD. These are not a super rare razor and can probably be picked up reasonably easily on ebay. They are extremely well made and will last forever. They shave well, medium aggressiveness (similar to your Merkur, maybe a tiny bit more gentle). Nice and solid one piece construction. Can't go wrong.

Edit: Writing the above inspired me to go and have my shave with the Rocket HD. It really is a nice razor. So well made and smooth to use. If Shaveaggedon ever comes and I am forced to choose just one razor to flee to the hills with, the rocket HD has a good chance of being the one.

yeeeeeaaahhhh, less space. I wonder why I only have 2 square inches to move my mouse around on my home desk?

John's suggestion for a English Aristo is a good one, they are wonderful shavers as well as wonderful tools. And legions suggestion for a cheaper, easier to find Rocket (HD or 40's even) is good too. I love my Rockets and if you get one with the clear/red styrene case that says "R O C K E T..." on it, then life is very fine indeed.

Yeah, don't worry about which one you get next. You will end up with all of them soon enough. :biggrin1:

I don't know much about vintage British models, but the EJ DE89l should do you well.

All of the Brit Gillettes are great. Just set a price limit and go for one. A few weeks later you'll be back to upgrade! Resistance is futile. The EJ and Muhles are great shavers, but your grandad probably used a Gillette or straight.

I have set my limits too. I want 2 good everyday razors, I think a merkur slant and a SuperSpeed, and then one for traveling. Not sure I am going to stick to just 3 though.

The problem is, I found myself wondering what would it be like to shave with "that razor" that I didn't own. Thinking, well I can always sell it for the same price taking the hit in the shipping. Cheaper then going to the barber shop for a shave. That's all easy enough, the crux of the problem is when you find out it's a pretty good shaver. They all are, just takes experience to make it work just right.

Well the other problem is when you get one that is well made, shiny like new.
