Would it Be Disrespectful?

Would it be a slap to the face of history or disrespectful to have a jeweler engrave my own initials on the cap of my Gillette Old Type?

The original ball end handle is long gone (likely cracked) and I have a Bull Mastiff handle coming soon so I entertained the idea of further customization after seeing John F. Kennedy's Old Type with "JFK" engraved on the cap.

Of course this would not be reversible whereas the handle can always be replaced with an original if someone so chooses and the razor has over 80 years of history before it ended up as my daily shaver.

Whatsay, fellers?
I don't wanna destroy history but I think it would be nice to have done.

It wouldn't be disrespectful. But I would not be as interested in buying a razor like that unless I knew it was someone famous.

Well I wouldn't sell my razor anyways but I see what u are sayin :wink2:
The razor came before me and will outlast me and the engraving will hurt it's future resale value.
Understood.
I wouldn't really wanna relegate it to second class status in the future so I suppose I shall deep six the notion.

It is yours my friend, and that means you can do as you wish with it, and the opinions of others be damned.
If engraving it makes you happy, then I think you should.
Plenty of cases on the bay with engraved initials, and plenty of monogrammed razors as well.
Doesn't seem to have affected the price of them in any case.
Ok, maybe a collector wouldn't want it, but yours is a shaver anyway, and no self respecting "artiste collector" will be bidding on your razor head when your gone.
Go for it!

Go for it. With the custom handle and initials, it has the beginnings of a family heirloom. Heirlooms have to start with someone.

I don't think it would be disrespectful at all. It's your favorite razor, and you plan on keeping it for a good long time. The addition of your initials could have the potential of turning it into a bit of a family heirloom. :tongue_sm

Back in the day, you could order them engraved. Gillette put out ads for customized razors that way, and someone posted one of those ads last month.
I don't see doing something now as disrespectful if its something Gillette would have done for you for a price.

Do it!

Old Type heads aren't exactly rare, so you're not roasting the last dodo here ... it yours and you should be allowed to leave your mark. If it outlives you (and it likely will), so be it--it'll give future B&Bers something to puzzle over.
