What's new

Worst shave ever.

I tore my face up good today. I would have to say that I have the worst case of razor burn I've ever had in my life. It wasn't the blade, it wasn't the lather, It wasn't the shower. I don't know what it was, maybe today was an "off" day. Maybe I was to excited to shave... I don't think my face can handle an every day. I think I should stick to my regular every third day routine. Any advice?

sounds bad...

also sounds like you used either too much pressure or bad angle or both.

take your time, focus on what you are doing. it will get better.

I have my technique down, I just don't know what it was about today. I usually shave before I shower with great results. Today I took my time and showered first. I made the effort to have a good shave. All I know is, its been eight hours and it still hurts.

Proraso Pre/Post cream. I've never had razor burn or irritation that it couldn't cure. An alcohol free cream lotion, again I use Proraso, will help to moisturize and heal the skin.

I do the short passes with the cream, although I might fall victim to not re lathering soon enough. I've been using alcohol aftershaves for the last fifteen years without any problems. Prior to starting DE.

i'd guess to much pressure, and probably no paying enough attention, if you can manage to shave every other day it will also helps your skin to heal

My general life rule is "keep it simple". Time will heal your burns, use non alcohol after shave if you suspect a "bad shaving".

so it wasn't the razor, it wasn't the lather, it wasn't the prep, it wasn't your technique - it's a mystery! (j/k :biggrin1: )

but seriously - the problem areas for a bad shave are the areas you are sure did not cause your results. if you want to find out the cause of your irritation you will need to go back and look at each step carefully, critically. no-one likes to admit their technique could do with some work (been there, done that) but DE shaving is different to carts or electric razors. to me, an 'off day' means it was a technique issue, esp if you have been using the same shaving gear with good results.

it is possible that a bum blade may be the culprit - was it a brand new blade? first time I used my Progress 510 I had shaved one side of my face, it was rough. I checked the cap was on the right way, it was. I checked the blade gap and adjustment, all seemed ok. I changed blades and proceeded to have a DFS.

I had bad results with my New LC some months ago and too quickly blamed the razor as being at fault. it was me. my angle was off which caused me to scrape and irritate my face and neck. it was painful. slowing down and being more focused on angle and pressure made all the difference. just saying that you need to check everything.

best of luck!

I've been using Aveeno Baby Soothing Relief Moisture Cream as an after shave balm and finds it to be fantastic. if it's good enough for babies then it should work for me. you don't need much and it's non-greasy. works great on a freshly shaved head too.

What passes do you make?

I make the standard WTG XTG and ATG + touch up...I'm not to keen on balms Chilliman64 but now that you mention it, I did feel kind of rushed. I share a bathroom with 3 other people so its kind of hard to get a peaceful shave.

Its either your technique or its the blade and if it was the blade, you would know long before you finished your first pass. For reference, blades are rarely bad so my guess is it was your angle, lather, poor technique, rushing through your shave or too much pressure.

I think I might have rushed it. Thanks for the advice guys. I will take my time from now on. I cant shave everyday so I will try waiting a day or two in between. Something I noticed was, whether it be a cartridge or a DE, If I wait a few days and get a decent growth,my shaves turn out smoother and more enjoyable IDK YMMV .

I get irritation/burn when I shave after showering. Showering first may soften the bristles more, but it also does something to my skin (raises the pores?) which leads to me being left with a burning face after shaving.

I got pretty bad razor burn yesterday as well, I believe it was not lathering trying to do touch ups, as well as my Semogue 1470 isn't broken in yet. Can't be the soap, I was using Stirling Anise, and even if its thin, that stuff is slick!

Give your face a day or two to heal. Use witch hazel a few times a day and keep your face moisturized. Razor burn is shaving off the top layer of skin, you gotta let it rebuild before shaving again!

My neck is still a bit tender, nothing witch hazel followed with Everyman Jack AS Lotion can't fix ;) Funny thing is, it was fine all yesterday and night out on my date till I washed the Old Spice off... New bottle of OS, and I tell you its one of my favorite aftershaves right now after a rough shave!

You should be able to get a decent workday shave with WTG/XTG (ATG on 2nd pass under jawline). Quicker, too!
