World ending - GD 66 with faired shoulders

So I gots me a set of Arkies today to complement my surgical black I already had. As those suckers needed lapping to flatten and polish them down, I grabbed me the DMT 325, went to the sink, and lapped away for awhile.

Turns out I also had a pair of 66's arrive today too. Ripped open the package, grabbed the 66 and thought I'd break in the rougher Arks a bit post-DMT before putting a better razor to them. Started in on half strokes and something wasn't right...holy criminy! They faired down the gimungous stabilizer! It sat on the hone just fine. I about choked, but sure enough, it nicely is smoothed-down and ready to hone. Wild. I'll post a pic later.

Anyone else find one like this? Did they change the process, or do you think I just got a non-standard? BTW, the other of the pair is the normal beast of a shoulder/stabilizer.

I feel like I got the four-leaf clover GD.

Ive gotten mixed . Some neither, one or the other, or both.

Still enjoy grinding down the shoulders... so i feel gypped when the shoulders are okay

Yeah, I recently got a batch of 10 GD66's, and wouldn't you know that they almost all sat on the hone okay (except for 2 of them)!! What is the world coming to?!? :001_tongu

The last couple I got had the stabilisers ground down. It looked like it had been done by a chimp, but I still appreciated the effort.

OK guys, enough storytelling...

Next thing you'll be telling us is that you can actually get a nice shave with a GD...

I guess I think of it like (gold) dollar cost averaging. You know, instead of buying your stock (of razors) all at once, it works out better if I buy 2 or three every couple months to stay on top of any overall improvements in quality control ;)

I hate to be Chicken Little, but prices can't stay that low forever at the present state of steel quality
IMO.

Ahh...but have you seen the prices? This last pair cost me nine-fifty total/shipped! That's like a whole dollar more than last time ;) really, there seems to be another competitor out there undercutting: there were cheaper offerings, but one had no brand name, and the other had the stamp on the tang, but no cheesy Gold Dollar on the scales. I went for the high class brand-name and had to pay extra, man!

Hmmm.... This makes me wonder about the abilities of the 4-stone stick I bought last week. I bought it for knife sharpening, but the "very fine" stone feels finer than the 8k side of my Norton 4K/8K. Very interesting....

Lol I hear ya! I just think we are in the Golden Era of Gold Dollars!

They are certainly a killer bargain, no doubt about that.

I got a few in the spring that had shoulders bigger than the Hulks. It's encouraging to hear they are doing a better job grinding them down from the factory. That tremendously reduces the amount of time needed to get them shave ready.

The 10 cents per hour workers must have made a mistake and ground one properly... Very poor quality control to send one out the door that is not a ***!

I will always and forever sic my Dremel on any new GD66 that comes within reach. It is now a deeply implanted instinct. If the heel doesn't need to be removed or thinned, then the spine needs thinning and the shank as well, to match, for a businesslike bevel angle and true shoulderless performance.

So, here's a few things to have a look at. Note that with the "typical" one, someone's at least buzzed the shoulder with a grinder. Didn't used to even do that a year+ ago if i recall.

faired-out vs typical, long shot from the end, if you look in the right place, you'll see its different:

this one is interesting, good shot from the back...maybe it looks better just cuz they didn't grind the blade as thin towards the edge on the "good" one. Still, it sure was easier to put a bevel on.

compare the shoulder/shank transition...the "good" one even has some of the tang ground down on the side:
