Wonderedge confusions

Hello, I have unfortunately been hooked by dubl ducks. However, as I was prowling the bay tonight, I noticed a substantial difference in prices for wonderedges. I feel confident in eyeballing a straight to see if its in decent condition and applying a price for said condition. However, I saw prices all over the place for this duck model in various conditions.

My question is, are there more sought after wonderedges than others because of factors unbeknownst to me. Like place of manufacturing, quality of steel used, etc?

I'be asked the same question lately on this forum and got no clear answer. According to some, the steel was treated differently and be of a better quality than other models by the same manufacturer. Personally I've never shaven with a Wonderedge. I have a Goldedge that is a really superb razor. Still pretty expensive if not really as much as the Wonderedge.

Some are heat treated differently. I can not remember which is which, but there are Goldenedge, Wonderedge, and Satinedge. I believe the Wonderedge goes through an additional cryogenic "heat" treatment.

You are correct. The WE goes through a cryogenic phase that the GE doesn't.
It's stated on the WE box. I'll see if I can come up with a pic.

Edit. here's a pic of the box (not mine)

I had a wonderedge...that razor compared to the other 2 models is that this one pivots around a hinge pin as apposed to the other two that moves on 2 sides of pins/washers

Nice to read the actual box to get the information, thanks for the post.

As far as comparing one Wonderedge to another Wonderedge though, were they all the same? For instance on Ebay I noticed two fairly similar listings as far as condition and with the box goes for Wonderedges and one went for almost $500 and the other went for a little over $200. Why the big difference? Is there something I should look out for?

To try to illustrate my question a little more. If I were looking at purchasing a fatboy I know that the red dot fatboy would be worth more than a regular fatboy. Both shave just as well as the other, but they have one small cosmetic feature that separates them apart.

Thanks for the help guys!

I haven't seen the ebay listings. Usually condition dictates pricing but there were also different generations and models of Wonderedge.
There are full hollow and quarter hollow models.
The last generation did not have the engraved tang (swirls to look hammered).
There was also a later stainless steel model.
The very last carbon steel model had acrylic scales rather than celluloid.

If you're looking for a rare, expensive Duck, try looking for the Lifetime Grim Reaper.

Not really looking hard, just trying to improve my knowledge so that when the time strikes I'll be ready. On a side note, which duck do you think is more rare--The Stainless or Grim Reaper?

Sorry for my confusing comment....one side has a pin and washer..the otherside has what LOOKS like a pin and washer but its a spindle..moves in circles between the spindle joints with ease and always will..no need to replace it like a regular pin and washer...hope this clarification helps :i0)

The Stainless is probably rarer (fewer made). The Grim Reaper more desirable because of the scales and the fact that it was Dubl Duck's most expensive razor when new. The Vesuvius was the forerunner to the Grim Reaper.

Pictures mainly. I sold a near mint WE with somewhat blurry pics one time that didn't even hit $100. A couple other WE that were in really bad condition with just barely better pics that finished around the same time went for $150-200. Look for blurry pics from reputable sellers with a return period on them to get them cheap. If you're selling, TAKE GOOD PICS.

Also reserve prices chase off a LOT of bidders and generally lower the end price quite a bit. A razor that started at $1 with no reserve will almost always sell for more than the same one that started at $50 with a $100 reserve, even if they both end well over the reserve.

It's silly, really. There's no reason not to bid on the reserve auctions, but for some reason many people don't.
