Smokey Winter Nights

full

So here in The Brown Leaf everything we all look forward to that time when we can sneak out during our days to slow down, relax, and partake in the brown leaf. With the winter and holiday season upon us, a nice puff on the pipe or cigar after that face stuffing holiday meal is almost as much of a ritual as the meal itself. But with the cold nights and pounding winds, rains, and snow how are you guys dealing with it? Any tips? Do you guys have any cold weather rituals while smoking the brown leaf?

The Smokey Brown Leaf PIF

So the PIF is simple enough, the item up for PIF is a Black Zippo Pipe Lighter

I like to make a pot of tea and turn on the heater in the garage for a bit, load up my pipe at my desk then make my way into the not so freezing garage. Then I smoke and throw my darts generally at my dart board and usually hit it!

I'm not in as I already have a Zippo pipe lighter, but wonderful PIF, perfect lighter for a windy day!

I generally smoke inside, so I don't have a whole lot to add in terms of outdoor smoking. I do find that as it gets colder, I'm more careful to only crack the window in my car a hair. One of the many advantages of a pipe over cigars and cigarettes, no need to ash out the window!

Well there's another option I guess for smoking in the cold....smoke in your car! Any tips on how to keep urself toasty in the car but also keep it relatively smelling smoke free??

Bundle up and go sit outside.

One of my favorite things is to sit outside at night in a sheltered area with snow on the ground. Everything is so quite in the snow, but there is more light that usual with the snow reflecting the moon and ambient light. Without any other distractions it's a great time to sit and think.

Fridays are Fishtastic!
I stay under cover and shielded from the wind. I find I hold the pipe as opposed to clinching to keep the hands warm- holding it with the palm above the chamber with the fingers holding the bottom, if that makes sense. I am going to abstain from this PIF, as I just won a Parker 51 in the Nib, but I wanted to say great PIF, Boris

Count me in, winter in my opinion is a great time of year to smoke a pipe. But also, in my opinion, its a horrible time of year to sit outside!

I can't smoke indoors, so I've been enjoying my pipe less frequently. When I do get the time to fill a bowl of whatever pipe I decide on, my tastes match my beers for the season. Dark and flavourful, the cold slows us all down, and I sip these dark blends as one would sip a thick double bock. I guess thats the only "Ritual" I have for the winter!

I'm pretty much like Commander Quan, except I usually smoke during the day instead of at night. I also have a propane sunflower heater going to take the edge off.

When I really want to relax and enjoy my smoke during the winter I will head to my "local" tobacco lounge and have a couple of sticks and read a book for about 4 hours and then head home. I put "local" in quotes as it about a 2 hour drive (each way) to the lounge.

I'm definitely in, getting sick of these Bic lighters.

My tip for when it is cold (and it is almost always cold and windy here) is to have a hat (beanie, whatever), thick coat, and light your pipe somewhere away from the bloody wind.

one of the holiday rituals I have with a bunch of high school and college friends that I don't see to often, is after thanksgiving dinner, we will all head out to my backyard, toss a few logs into my fire pit, everyone gets comfy around the fire, with a few bottles of scotch, brandy, and cognac. We then break out cigars, pipes, and hookah, and just spend the evening smoking and catching up with each other and hanging out.

That sounds like the perfect way to spend Thanksgiving evening.

I'm developing some winter rituals for the first time. For a while I was going out barefoot with a coat and toboggan cap (I really just like being barefoot regardless of the whether). But the last few nights it's been under 20 degrees so I've popped on a pair of wool socks before heading out to the patio. A few nights I've called it quits because the wind really cuts down on the relaxation factor.

Just started pipe smoking this fall, but think I am now on hold til spring except for rare warm days. Can't smoke in the house; garage is not heated; sitting outside on a snow-covered chair is not appealing!

I'm in, I love the smell of cold, even better with a hint of pipe tobacco! I have an old lazy boy in the garage I'm planning on using this winter. My wife is in law school, now and then I sneak a bowl on the couch when she is in class.

I just use a little heater and stand by it, doesn't make it teeshirt weather but helps keep your teeth from chattering.

Teeshirt weather is Edmonton? What's that... 34 Fahrenheit?
-12 C depending on the wind and sun. Since it is so dry out here the cold doesn't bite too bad as compared to the coast, if I was in Victoria I wuss out at about 0 C
