Winter Time at Badger and Blade

The Aftershave Edition

[/URL]

The cold weather is upon us, winter is here. A lot of members put away their light citrus type scents in favour of the heavier woody ones. But winter is about more then just feeling cold upon your face it can dry it out as well This time of year its important to keep properly moisturised to heal the shave you just had, and be properly prepared for the shave ahead. What we would love to hear from the members of the Aftershave forum is what scents as well as hydrating Aftershaves you guys use to get you through the cold weather ahead.

Explorer all of B&B as winter has hit almost the whole forum
and there is a lot more to catch up on around town

Weather doesn't really change my scent preference. In the winter I prefer Musgo Real; either the balm or the splash. They are both great smelling products that are wonderful when the weather is cold and the air is dry. I've favored the balm in the past, but this year I still have about half a bottle of the splash that I need to use up. It's been performing wonderfully in the cold weather. We had snow this morning, and the splash is doing a great job at protecting and moisturizing.

I have dry skin, so it's time to use an aftershave balm. My face would get in pretty bad shape without something to moisturize when the air is dry and cold. QCS balms are my favorite - having jojoba, shea, aloe, and allantoin I think of them as a powerhouse of a skin conditioner. I put them on my entire face, not just the beard area and have no problems. Of course winter here is sporadic, often goes from below freezing to rather warm in the course of 18 hours so the splashes don't get put away entirely.

As far as scents, I unfortunately have to choose light and neutral ones all year due to the migraines. In the winter I actually tend to go for even more fleeting or outright unscented products. Being stuck in a stuffy room or hot car with a powerful fragrance is even more ominous than in the summer with air conditioning in use. Of course that makes me an unusual case here at B&B, and I envy you gentleman who can enjoy the wonderful and seasonally appropriate fragrances!

I've definitely been using more of my balms and even a dedicated moisturizer (which I should probably be using anyway). The Burt's Bees balm is not one of my favorite products as I think it's too runny, but it does have a great smell and helps keep the evening chill from drying me out too much. On other days, I've been using the Pacific Shaving Co. Moisturizer. Fairly light grapefruit scent with a fairly dense cream that takes a little work to rub in. I likely will not be buying either product again once these run out.

Unless I become a real glutton for punishment, the Skin Bracer probably will not be getting much use for the next few months.

one of my go-to's right now in the slightly chilly so cal weather is Capt Choice bay rum. I love that stuff, normally its enough to keep my face nice and moisturized, but it the winter months it seems like my face gets slightly drier than usual so I use some Nancy Boy moisturizer (which is awesome too) after the aftershave

I LOVE trafalgar but this time of year its so warm and calming, after a hot shave following a cold day at work, I find nothing so nice going to bed than smelling that drifting away into dream land

Just heaven

I use Krampert's Frostbite year round but rotate Ogallala Sage and Cedar, Old Spice, English Leather, and Myrsol Aqua Balsamica more frequently as the weather cools. I have oily skin and do not use balms.

Splash followed by Avon Conditioner AS Balm. For splashes I think Pinaud Clubman will be my choice after I finish Adidas. Do you gouys like Pinaud in winter?

Musgo Real is my go-to winter A/S, both for moisturising and for the scent.

Although my favorite any time of year remains Speick ASL, I reach for the balms much more often in the winter. My favorites are TOBS Luxury Herbal ASB, Proraso ASB and GFT Coral Skin Food.

Oh I forgot to mention Proraso White Balm... also great herbalbwarm notes for this time of year, and great performance as well

I have been using the myrsol emulsion before bed at night. Its a solid pre/post balm as well, but I find that after washing my face and lightly applying the myrsol (which contains lanolin) it just smooths and heals my skin after a rough day. Course I live in LA so there's not so much "winter" here. LOL so take what I say with a grain of salt

Burt's Bees is a total Winter balm. Masks the face really well and has a citrusy-wood smell. The best thing IMO.

This is one of my favorite seasons, I hope it gets Siberia cold. I enjoy going for late night walks in the deep of winter when there is snow the air is frigid, around midnight there is no one out at all in my small town so it is quiet and pristine. My Schott navy melton wool pea coat along with my gray rabbit full fur ushanka do the best job I do not even notice the cold only in my face do I feel it, I have fairly dry skin and well an AS alone would make my face fall apart and peel like mad in this weather.

After a shave I will apply a balm like Lea or Nivea or even Every Man Jack to moisturize my face well, letting it sink in as I finish my clean up I will come back and use a splash on AS over the balmed skin as this method works for me and I get the tingling and benefits of the splash. I tend to prefer deeper and more rich and also nostalgic AS's this time of year, Clubman and Clubman SR are very popular with me as well as Aqual Velva Musk...I have a bottle of Captains Choice Cat o 9 Tails I am waiting for to arrive in the mail...likely it will become one of my winter favorites.

So, for us non-balm guys, what would you recommend? I don't like balms, I have sort of oily skin and it just feels...I dunno, greasy I guess. I have Proraso Green AS splash for year round, and Old Spice of course, but I'm open to recommendations. The only one I've put on (and it stings like a bastard) that makes me think of Winter is Royal Copenhagen, which my daughters tell me smells like Christmas candy.

Floïd Blue Italiano.... I was not a splash guy in winter time, but this one is GREAT!

In my case, less Proraso Green or Arlington Splashes, and more balms (EJ Aloe Vera, Proraso Vitamin E+Aloe Vera) and the Blue!
