Plastic muck boots are very popular right now both here and Japan. They fit over shoes and run twenty five to fifty bucks a pair.

If you need something that can double as hiking boots I would recommend something with Gortex. I use Asolo brand hiking boots that I wear all winter when I am out in the snow and slush as well as for camping and hiking during the summer.

I also use the Asolo Fugitive GTX hiking boot for all of my winter activities, including snowshoeing. They really get the job done. I also have a relatively inexpensive pair of Irish Setter hunting boots that are waterproof and have Thinsulate that work better when it's a bit colder. I found them at the local sporting goods shop around this time of year heavily discounted as it is almost the end of hunting season.

The Fugitive is the model I have also. I bought them about five years ago and they seemed to have gone up quite a bit in price. They are holding up very well though. They were also one of the few boots at the store that were not made in China, which I liked.

If you know the size he wears for whatever shoe 6pm and Sierra Trading post usually have some killer deals on snow/hiking boots. I'd check them out too.

I wear Bellville 800ST's. I've had them resoled with a different tread, and they're just a tad on the heavy side but by far the toughest most comfortable pair of boots I have ever owned...probably find them in your price range too if you look. They are an eight inch boot though. Do not be put off by the fact they're flight deck boots. They're tough as hell. I only retired my first pair because I got a second pair issued to me. A fifty dollar resoling and a good conditioning session and I gave them to a friend who still has them four years later.

The Wellco version of the same. They're made to the same specs and look identical in person. I am sure they're just as good.

+1 on the Asolo. If you are looking for a Gortex boot to double as a hiker, the Asolo Flame is an outstanding boot.
