Wine of the Day - WOTD - 2025

Happy New Year everyone!

I started 2025 with a stellar Austrian Riesling.

Alzinger ~ Loibenberg Riesling Smaragd, 2010

A complex nose of pineapple, lemons and wet stone. Same in the taste. Deep, complex and layered. A laser sharp acidity, super vivid and joyful. Long finish, super delicious.
As stated, a stellar wine...

Cheers!

Meyer-Fonné Pinot Noir ~ Reserve, 2021

A rich, radiantly beautiful and at the same time cool cherry fruit. Mouth-filling, fascinating fruit. The use of wood provides structure.

What it lacks in additional depth it makes up for with its drinking flow.
A delicious (!!!) Pinot.

Cheers!

Natural/Orange Roter Traminer from Kamptal - so far out from everything common nowadays but still very drinkable.

A birthday gift from 2024 (very subtle message indeed :c1: ) - Spanish Monastrell, a bomb but we were at a minimum 5 years to early opening it. Brutally tannic, 14.5% and needed over an hour to open up at least a little bit.

Opened this single quinta vintage port after seeing it at the local discount liquor for $30. At worst, we have a decent ruby. At best, the next bottle is very good in 10 more years. Decanter says its drinking window opened a couple years ago. It is very young as the color suggests. No bad notes, but nowhere near the last three vintage ports we’ve opened (‘70 Taylor’s, ‘85 Dow’s, and ‘83 Cockburn’s). Floral with violets. Happy to have found this in the US.

We had a big family gathering today. The holidays were extended until we could get everybody together. Several bottles were opened. It allows for small tastes of several bottles. All three were good.
1. Titus Cab Franc
2. Williamson (Dry Creek, Sonoma) Shiraz
3. Williamson Grand Cuvée
And we had the last of a 1976 Carvalhas Colheita.
