Will dragging a razor across your palm ruin it?

I would think that depending on how you did it and if you did it repeatedly you might be able to roll the edge a little but I highly doubt you'd ruin it.

Just my .02, but I'm no straight razor expert.

Let's wait for the str8 experts to chime in.

Ruin your palm or the razor? (sorry, couldn't resist)

I just got it in the mail and haven't received my strop yet. I just had to try it, though and it pulled something fierce. Then I started worrying if it's possible to roll the edge and maybe I broke it, or maybe it just needed to be stropped first.

So while I wait for the strop I decided to cover all the bases :tongue_sm

You can actually stop a razor on the heel of your hand using an X-stroke. I doubt that you did the razor any harm on your palm but did someone hone this razor for you?

yessir (i hope anyway). I bought it "shave ready" on ebay from another member here.

Well if you bought it from another member on here or at least a reputable seller, and by reputable I mean they're known for selling shave ready razors either by B&B or SRP members, you should be fine.

Its alright. I do a few X's on my palm under running water to clean any lather off the edge after each shave.

Im personally paranoid about this, only because our skin is acidic. I fear the acid in my skin will only corrode my edge faster than what is normal. I highly doubt you ruined the edge to answer the question.

Its most likely your technique, although if you dragged it across your palm with the blade perpendicular to your skin, its possible to have rolled the edge. Does it still cut arm hairs easily? If so, your razors fine. If not, your razors not so fine.

What angle are you shaving with? Are you using short strokes? Practicing angle and how to hold the blade on the back of your hand might help.

Here's a video of Ol' Mastro Livi honing and stropping a custom razor. At 3:50 he demos his hand stropping technique before taking the razor and doing a dry shave test.

+1.
Does it still cut arm hair?
Put the blade's spine as close to your skin as possible, even touching.
Never move it up more than one, to 1.5 spine widths away from your skin.

I know right, from bread-knifing it to shave ready in less than 5 minutes.

The vid never ceases to amaze me. However, he does use a ridiculously high angle to shave with at the end. But either case, it passes the weird lock of hair test.

I'm nowhere past the n00b stage in anything related to straight razors, so it is still amazing to note all the unusual things he does. He flips the razor against the edge when stropping, that rubbing method when honing, the lock of hair test you mention....

Well, actually, everything he does makes perfect sense to me.

Its just damn impressive how fast he moves and how quickly he gets that bevel done. And how little time he spends on the 4k. But then again, I have no idea how sharp the razor really is except that its sharp enough for him. Perhaps one day I'll know. But not anytime soon.

Yeah seriously. What is going on there? I've always thought 'Ah, maybe this is some uncommon but accepted technique he is using.'
